I know we've had lots and lots of religion threads before, but following on from the creation vs evolution debate, do you think that religion has suffered a decline in the last century? If so, why?

In the middle ages, religion was the be all and end all, life revolved around it. Nowadays it comes under scrutiny and appears to be followed by less and less people. I can't seem to put my finger on why. The role of the church has lessened, society seems to be more corrupt, perhaps it is the fault of the mass media?

No longer to people live and die by religion, it is seen as becoming increasingly flexible, people bending the rules to suit themselves?

Personally, I believe that religion does have a place in modern society, however it needs to become applicable to our lives.

'Needs to become applicable to our lives'?

What, exactly, does that mean?

no way is society more corrupt now than it used to be. medieval england was full of perverts, philanderers, coman, cheats, liars and theives. Many of these were part of the church.

If anything, the decline in the popularity of the church has led to society becoming increasingly tolerant and diverse. It also indicates that people are increasingly likely to choose not to follow organised religion when they have free choice.

The media always seems to become the scapegoat in these situations. It's easy to point the finger at these mega-institutions and blame them for all our wrong-doings (i know you only said 'perhaps'). In my opinion it all comes down to human behaviour, which hasn't fundamentally chnaged that much since the period i identify above. There will always be good eggs and bad eggs, and society now is definitely no worse than it used to be. We may be more aware of the evil that does occur, but surely that's better than turning a blind eye to corruption and violence as people used to.

People are queueing up in some countries to die for their religion. It's true that it is becoming more flexible for a large proportion of people, but the words and meanings of pretty much all holy teachings have been manpulated since their early translations to suit the academic authorities who had access to them.

Rule-bending is as old as religion itself.

Would I be brandished basic to state that there's an irony in the thread title that religion is the main factor in the slow destruction of modern society?

Or have I missed the point?

I disagree with that - my personal belief is that part of the reason for the decline of the church in this country is it's increasing relunctancy to stand up for it's beliefs.
The churches with most growth in the world are the ones that DO stand by their beliefs, and aren't so busy trying not to offend people that they just blend in with the rest of society.

Yes, more than ever!

The decline of Christianity in Britain has gone hand in hand with the decline of family values and common decency! Yeah yeah, we're all Soooo clever and sophisticated now aren’t we, and things are soooo great now we're all allowed to do pretty much what the f*** we want! Society is so wonderfully diverse now, you can be murdered and mutilated by all manner of fellow these days, it's greeeeeat! We've destroyed planet Earth in all manner of highly advanced and clever ways haven't we! We've killed off more species than you can shake a stick at because we're so damn clever. We're far too clever to need God! Who needs God when everything is soooo spiffing and we're so clever now?

f***ing pseudo-intellectuals, you think you know it all! You think you have the answers to everything, politics, death, the meaning of life, because you have a f***ing degree!

It seems to me that evil is starting to tip the balance over good in the human psyche and on Earth. As the human soul / spirit regresses and withers the human brain advances and the arrogance and pride of man spirals out of control so that man now believes in nothing but himself and all the s*** he's created on Earth and he follows nothing but his base desires and serves only his own selfish needs!

From where I'm sitting, mankind looks f***ed! God help us all!
