i doubt he has madcap, with attitudes like his he probably hasn't left even left these beautiful shores, unless it was for a week in spain visiting the english bar every night

Madcap, with all due respect I have been to Kingston and was appalled by a number of things, amongst them 1 The agressive following and downright attempted intimidation on every corner for having white skin 2 Drug addicts lying in the street in the main business district 3 The living conditions of most of the people 4 Locals warning me not to go out in the evening and not to get on buses at all costs 5 The rudeness, lethargy and yes downright racism of near evryone I came into contact with because of my white skin Now I know you wont receive this post well, and who could expect you to , but my own impressions of jamaicans and jamaica both in Kingston and here, have (excepting yourself) done nothing other than appall me. The gun culture is all pervasive, evrything revolves around Respect and macho bulls*** posturing and as a whole, Jamaicans in this country have a much higher incidence of crime, unemployment, violence, absentee fathers...I could go on. In the Borough where I grew up as a kid, Croydon, in the area of Addiscombe, it more resembles downtown Kingston Jamaica in Dealercracktown, than the lovely place I grew up in.

higher unemployment has always meant higher crime, black people in this country get employed alot less, think about the reasons behind what you sat reborn. and anyway, waasn't this thread about immigrants? most west indians in this country are well and trully british!

Bexter, Asians face much the same and probably more barriers (as they aren't cool) and yet they continue to excell and have a higher rate of academic achievment and employment than any ethnic group including caucasian anglo-saxons. Many of the ills that confront the black community in this country can be laid firmly at their own door. and the reason why this thread has veered into other territory is because I was responding to a specific point about Jamaica.

i catagorically think you are wrong about asians - not only do they have a culture of family business and a closed set, i do not for a minute believe they have been discriminated against in the work force on the same level as blacks... but i am open to be proven wrong!

It does , of course, depend on which part of the Asian community you are referring to. Those of Pa kistani and Bangladeshi origin have far lower rates of achievement than those of an Indian background. An Indian-Asian will receive racism in the same way as a Bangladeshi but will achieve more. Cultural and class backgrounds are all important.

hmmmm maybe so but a desire to look inwards for your problems and faults rather than project onto others would not go amiss amongst some sections of Londons immigrant population.

guess it's hard to prove who has a harder time reborn..... my experience says being black seems to more of an obstacle to getting a job.... but i could be wrong. Edited by Bexter (05 Apr 2005 1:48pm)
