The Emergency services must be praised for the way they handled things today, they were totally outstanding!

Second that, they were fantastic

I don't work up town, but every shot on the TV I saw the Emergency services looked calm and organised. Well done!

I think Blair and Livingstone have been very good at handling this.

Agreed, the quickness of Blairs response to the media, and then to head back to London was very good IMO.

I have never been a fan of Ken Livingstone, but I thought it was a very moving, non-scripted speech that he gave, which will have reflected the thoughts of many Londoners.

Agree totally with this. Ken Livingstone has never done anything whatsoever to impress me before, but he was speaking right from the heart. He was so emotional and i'd say he spoke not just for Londoners but for the whole of Britain.

Quote Cucking Funt at 07 Jul 2005 9:31pm

Giovanni. Because these people are so scattered, I can't see the UK unilaterally going out to bomb some indeterminate country as 'revenge' for this. As you rightly say, it is virtually impossible to strike at their core, for the simple reason that there isn't one. You're also right in that we don't have any specific knowledge about Al Q'aeda other than the statements that they've made vowing to destroy the West. In fact, we don't even know if Al Q'aeda even exists in the same form that it did on 9/11. We have to go on what we know.

What we know is that these people are fanatics whose beliefs are far, far outside our range of understanding and are seen as pariahs even by most (but probably not all) Arab governments. Faced with this 'invisibility', we are obliged to work with other countries in order to locate them and deal with them and, if necessary, encourage regime change in countries that openly and practically support them and their aims (such as in Afghanistan). Their fundamentalism will not permit them to deal with the West in any shape or form other than by attack. The onward march of fundamentalism is therefore the real problem here.

By permitting fundamentalist activity in this country, we are effectively leaving our door wide open to terrorist attack, as other Western countries are, in their attempts to be 'tolerant'. Unfortunately, it is this very tolerance towards an ideology whose only objective is to destroy us that is our downfall. I can't even imagine what could be done to halt islamic fundamentalism and I fear what is yet to come - I suspect that events like today and 9/11 will pale into insignificance. We have no idea how many others are here, and nor do other countries know how many 'sleepers' they are harbouring.

Asking about whether we'd kill them or not if caught is really beside the point - their value of human life, including their own, is evidently very little. We have to be increasingly vigilant and possibly surrender some of our much-cherished 'rights' in order to even begin to combat it (ID cards, here we come). And even then, that won't stop it. It's a very depressing thought.

Top, thought out and well explained post. The sort of thing I was looking for. I don't have a tolerent attitude to thees b******s myself. And I do agree with encouraging regime change where possible and needed (although not in the Gung-Ho Bush style. Most of my fears have come from reading some (not all) of the posts on certain site's and in rather heated disscusions here at home. At home the mentality seems to be the gung-ho lets get together with the US and destroy every country where all the little evil bombing Arabs live. It scares me to be honset.

I also see your point about surrendering some of 'rights' ala Identity Cards. Whist I have no problem with them intialy, I don't see how they will be able to stop terrorist, where there's a will there's a way ect. But that is another discussion.

I also feel helpless, and that the only thing I can do is to carry on living the life I see fit,and that if I didn't I would be giving in and allowing the terrorist b******s a victory they are not intitled to have. Either way thees are dificult times ahead. One thing is for sure. Irispective of whether we on this site, agree on what action to take now or not, no matter who we are, what religion we may or may not be and what beliefs we hold close to our hearts. This Country has some very tough decisions to make. And it will define us for years to come.

This club has had some great moments.

Thank you Giovanni for your apology. I do agree with many of the points you have made as well.

My problem is that we always seem to sit back waiting for these things to happen. No matter what precautions our security forces take, and I really do admire them along with the emergency services who I thought were magnificent today, the terrorists seem to be able to strike. I strongly suspect that a lot of suspected terrorists in this country are known by the Security Services...perhaps it is time to imprison these people as suspected terrorists rather than allow them to stay free?

I think that people, such as the person serving time in Belmarsh, the Hook bloke, should be held to account. He preaches racial hatred against Jews, amongst others, the Black Muslim group in America (can't remember there name) also preach racial hatred against the Jews. Why do the rules for punishing these people apply to europeans criticising Muslims but not on Muslims inciting hatred against Jews?

I hasten to add I am not Jewish, but I think today has highlighted what they have had to put up with in the terms of suicide bombers over the years. I do not excuse the things they have done against the Palestinians.

Perhaps it is time to suspend the political correctness in this country which has castrated the freedom of speech for many people. In addition I suggest we suspend the Human Rights Act for any terrorists apprehended as they are clearly not human. The people they bombed were civilians.

I got home about 30 mins ago. It was certainly a traumatic day in the City, you wondered what was going to happen next.

Tomorrow my company have decreed that all but '' essential '' staff can stay at home. At first, being the pragmatic business feller I am, I agreed with that. Then on the way home it hit me...I've just been tasked with selecting people to go back into the ' fireing line ' again tomorrow ! - How will I feel if something happens to one of them ?? I'll be there as well, and I actually believe EVERYONE should try to carry on as usual, but I feel as though I've been placed in a position that I shouldn't have to be in.....thoughts ????

It doesnt look nice to be in that situation Neillo. If you feel that something might happen tomorrow then sort it out into who has family, even though it wouldnt matter much if something does happen tomorrow.

Those that see them as the enemy, may like to note that if they go on the UBA march they could well be marching with them.

FROM UBA

Hello there,

I am from the UBA (United British Alliance), a non-racist organisation. We are planning a demonstration in London on July 23rd, where we will march UNITED as patriotic British people.
We have already scored victories against Muslim terrorists, in particular, Omar Bakri who preaches hate against this country whilst claiming benefits of approximately £2000 a week from the government.
We are sick of fascists who claim to have the best interests of the country because they do not accept that there are British Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and British people from other ethnic origins.
We are also sick of the PC world and nanny state that we have to live in, and are sick to the pits of our stomachs that human rights would be infringed in order to protect innocent people like those who died today.
We have a forum where issues are discussed between many people. We have details of the march coming up online soon, and we want to help co-ordinate a mass protest to persuade the government to take stronger action on immigration, human rights policy, and against those who want to harm our country whilst fleecing taxpayers or hard earned money. We do believe in freedom of speech though, we do believe in democracy, but most of all, we believe in Great Britain.

We have been successful last year in stopping Muslim rallies held by Omar Bakri, we were given permission to lay a wreath at the 9/11 memorial on behalf of British people which was conducted impeccably and solemnly, and we marched alongside British Sikhs amongst many others who oppose the threat of terrorism.

We are patriots not racists. We care for all those who are British and have Britain's interests at heart.

I thank you for your time and hope that you can take a look at our website and join us in our demonstration. We must put pressure on the government to rid our shores of terror.
