I started my football supporting life as a Larne fan in Northern Ireland. Local team. "B" Divison champions. Great stuff!! Used to help with the laundry and putting the dubbin on the boots. [Link]

Knew all the players.

As for "over the water" well like a lot of NI people i supported man Utd because of George Best and the other Irish players in the Man U team.

That went on until I was about 20/21 when I went to watch Palace vs Man Utd at Selhurst. Palace won 5-0 and I just loved the atmosphere of Selhurst. I lived in Camberley, Uckfield and East Grinstead during my early support, and I loved making those train journey's to Croydon or Selhurst. Every other Saturday and midweeks when the games were on, were devoted to Palace.

Reserve games, when possible were good fun too.

In fact Palace were a big part of the reason I eventually decided to work in London and move from East Grinstead to Selhurst.

I suppose I always retained a soft spot for Man Utd except when they play Palace. So I lack that hatred a lot of Palace fans feel for them. But for the last 30 odd years Palace has definitely been number one.

Oh.......and the other reason is......... I'm a masochist.

I first went to Palace with my elder brother in 1975, enjoyed the match (can't exactly remember which game!), and have supported them ever since. My son did support Arsenal, but hadn't been to a game, & my mate at work got school tickets for a home game 3 years ago. I took my son to see if he'd like the crowd, game, atmosphere, etc, saying to him that if he liked it, & wanted to go, I'd try & sort out tickets for an Arsenal game. Went to the Palace match, he thoroughly enjoyed, had to buy him a Palace shirt there & then, he's never mentioned that North London team since!!

Spent my childhood hanging at CP park, boating, fishing, and just being a brat, living just 100 yards away, and Im still missing the motor racing
shame that came to an end, worked on the sports centre in 1961 helping the engineers measure out the seating area's.
First match at selhurst in the Holmesdale, with the wind blowing round the marble arches was 1953, watching Johny Byrne [RIP]
What a player so much skill and composure.
Never looked back since, dispite all the banter from the glory seekers.

When I was little I 'supported' Liverpool (glory hunting as some kids do), then I got a life & decided to pick a local(ish) team to Essex that I could go & watch regularly, but I wanted to be different(from Ipswich, West Ham, Arse, Spurs etc). The rest is history.

Supported Palace since 1973 because I'm Croydon born and bred.(Wouldn't have it any other way). Not a glory hunter like many others. Seen a lot of lows, but the highs seem even sweeter cos of that.
Lived in Kent for the last 15 years and still go regularly. Thank Christ I wasn't born down this neck of the woods as I would probably have followed the Pikeys (There is a god!!)
