Take my hat off to you, JohnG for sticking to your guns
and providing a plausible reason why there is this hatred. I've compared this to the Celtic-Rangers rivalry but at least you can put that down to religion!

As a Palace supporter since the late 1940's I think I've seen it all, well most of it. I fully understand the history behind this rivalry but still can't understand why people can't seem to accept that any team (even Brighton) who come up from the Championship deserve to.
That is why I am rooting for them in the play-offs because I want to see 'hostilities' resumed on the pitch.
If I get shouted down then so be it and I am not concerned but those who feel the same are entitled to their views. They should be respected for having a different view.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, it was Johng who was casting aspersions, not the other way round.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Right, so this all comes down to your being terrified that if they are promoted they might beat us next season. Well they do say hatred is based on fear.

If they do go up and they do 'thrash the arse off us' then I'll be disappointed and pissed off But I would just have to suck it up and say (if the victories were deserved) that the better team won. I would then let it go and hope for better the following year. A kind of healthy take on things I think. Why don't you give it a whirl?

Unlike you, I don't wish them one millisecond of success. If they do manage to crawl into the PL then we'll do our best to teach them a lesson, but I'd much rather they wallowed in their own disappointment than give them the chance to repay their massive debts for the sake of a couple of games a season.

Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing!

No, just YOUR idea of rivalry. Anyway if you read back on the thread, various bods don't even consider it a rivalry. I do and stand by my earlier comment that there is no point in having rivals if you don't play them.

For me personally, I don't want them to come up.
It is the satisfaction of knowing that Palace still have massive bragging rights over brighton who should always be looking up at us. Knowing that they won't have the massive cash injection from the TV deal.
They are so jealous of us and hate to live in our shadow.
If they do come up, we will be on a level par.
For the sake of 2 games a season, i would rather they stay where they are. i wish them no success at all.

I have to say this is my view too. I can't stand the thought of those jokers actually beating us or getting on a level financial playing field. I want them to be below us as long as possible. Of course I'm realistic enough to know that one day we'll be in the championship and they'll be in the Prem. Until that day I'll enjoy watching them fail.

Because of this alleged "rivalry". Man Utd and Liverpool have a rivalry; Newcastle and Sunderland have a rivalry.

We hate Brighton and they hate us; but (for me, at least) that's it. They are not a natural rival, it's just born out of Alan Mullery being a t***, them copying our nickname and a quirk of the fixture computer setting a couple of games in a row on a public holiday.

Exactly this.

An extraordinarily spineless point of view. You would rather not play them just in case they beat us in preference to having the opportunity to do them over.

Why should we fail? ..our stadium is being rebuilt, fan base will grow because of it with even better players feeling obliged to join in the fun, we can also enjoy the fun of beating them, cannot think of anything better.

Do you think Brighton fans rejoiced when we were promoted. I'm sure they all wished us a long and happy life in the premiership.

I'm sure they were hoping not only to be promoted but for us to be relegated.

Personally I'd love to see them miss out. Not only because of the rivalry, but because they seem to think as they have such a great set up they deserve to be in the premiership.
