This thread was started with a stupid joke about EU membership so we are on topic.

It is unlikely that Turkey would apply for membership unless it was fairly sure it would be accepted. There are many reasons why a European Turkey would be useful to the West.

This is serious you d*ck

Stop with the silly politics

Anyone on this site in Istanbul or Ankara with first hand knowledge? I have loads of good mates in Istanbul and Ankara and have faith in - and empathy with - the average Turkish person. I hope to goodness this doesn't escalate.

political leadership has been "detained," military forces say.

Erdogan was pretty hated by all sides as far as I can tell.

A beautiful country with some very lovely people indeed from my experience.

I hope they get rid of Erdogan and settle down with their secular governance which has served them well.

They have respected graveyards for invading British/Anzac enemy soldiers from WW1 on their own land ffs.

They are a good lot.

Turkey is now looking at a civil war & I would expect isis to take full advantage of the situation.

This is very, very serious, on many levels, in the short and longer term.

Too early to place blame or propose solutions but there will be a huge fallout from this situation.

While not many will mourn the Erdogan government, the instability in such a beautiful country is alarming, not just for the country but for the region and beyond.

Erdogun has tried to introduce many backward laws and for once maybe military intervention may not be the worst measure. Hopefully a better outcome than the present situation, but who knows?

Lets hope sanity prevails.

The army are not ISIS friendly. The Turks could kick their butts in a nano second if they were allowed to.

The Syrian army was more than capable of smashing isis but look what civil war has allowed to fester there.

Hopefully this is over quick & we can get a secular Turkey back, I suspect this is the start of something quite catastrophic for Turkey...

Turkey has a very healthly democracy, 86% turnout at the last election. They vote. They voted for the current govenment.

That govenment has become more authoritarian but they could still vote him out. All the main opposition patries have condemed the "Coup attempt".

A coup is not an improvement for the country. A country that is an important NATO member and has a cruciale role to play in the region at this time.

I think you will see large scale protest, democracy is valued there, by the people at least.

This. Erdogan is taking the country down a very dark path and the military are right (in my view) to do something about it. They stepped in the last time a civilian leader tried to bring religion into government.
