Exactly the same objections would be lodged as if we were proposing to build a football stadium in the park. Do you seriously think that the local residents would draw a distinction between us moving into a stadium that was already built and a purpose built one. Also, do you really want a stadium with a running track round the pitch? Plus, it's 2026 and it took four years to convert the Olympic Stadium, so you'd be looking at 2030; Harris and Blitzer would have lost interest and pissed off long before that. Finally, it definitely wouldn't be free.

First bit is correct.

Second bit isn't. Retractable seating can quite easily be built into an original design. The French did it 18 years ago with the St Denis; So if this ever did come to pass (which it won't) and CPFC are involved from the get-go there is no reason to believe that a running track and a conversion would be an issue.

As you quite rightly point out, it's a non-starter.

Perhaps councils will start acting like places in the USA do for NFL. They would do literally anything to have an NFL franchise in their area.
Imagine how much having a Premier League Club in your borough must be worth to the Council.
Always surprises me that the Councils don't recognise this but I guess they are short-sightedly pandering to the NIMBYs.

Shame though isn't it?

If Crystal Palace was an area in need of redevelopment I'm sure Khan would be entirely supportive.

As it is it offers little to the wider community apart from more traffic.

Maybe a threat to relocate to an other borough would give them a kick up the backside they need.

I know what you mean but I don't think they would care. Little is made of the benefits of football clubs to local businesses and the community in England. They are not really considered an amenity by those that govern.
Football clubs in England are looked at as a hindrance and the cause of anti-social behaviour on a weekend.
Despite the fact they are a cash cow for police and local authorities who charge them to the hilt, the council would side with the WI's Knitting Circle and get rid of football supporting oiks altogether if they could.

Its a beautiful dream....but meanwhile let's have an improved and updated Selhurst Park in the next five years please!

To be fair, as much as I'd like to see Palace have a nice new stadium, the system in the US is a joke. Billionaire owners holding cities to ransom, demanding that they build/improve stadiums or they threaten to take the team elsewhere. It's horrible and makes the West Ham/Man City deals look almost fair by comparison.

Those NIMBYs are the voters that keep them in office. Supporters of the local club rarely make up a significant proportion of the electorate.
