for once its got naff all to do with the mail, it's Lily Allen "speaking on our behalf"

I read about this today(on the bbc website), i'm glad my initial thoughts weren't too ott then. Pretty much agree with whats being said in outrage about her.

The beeb carry quotes from her 'interview' but mention nothing to do with the replies to her tweets etc but then it was first thing this morning and hasn't been updated since, plus its their tv program so they'll hardly comment against it will they

No doubt, the entire piece will be plastered all over this years misery fest, Children in Need......

I read, as much as I could stomach, on the BBC too. She can f*** right off with her "we" crap.

Totally agree CP. An asylum seeker/refugee should seek asylum in the first safe haven they arrive at, these are economic migrants, believe me I have seen numerous examples. Perhaps Ms ALLEN should open her mega property for the use of these poor people..oh I thought not.

She wouldn't even let her singular stalker stay. One person invades her house and she has him arrested but she wants to open the borders to these lot.

There are no wars in France, Spain or any other European country that they might have passed through to get to the Calais Jungle. Rather than seeking asylum in one of those countries, they have chosen to press on in an attempt to reach the UK.

The extent of the contribution that we have made to the state of the middle east is open to debate but I don't see why we should apologise for somebody being willing to risk their life to upgrade from France to the UK.

Do you not think that they are told by agents who take their money to get them into Europe that they should come to UK ? Or that they have family here ? Or there are rumours about how good life actually is here ? Some of them probably have to come here because they need to work off the the rest of their debt. Frankly 3000 people distributed across the country is a drop in the ocean and if the French authorities aren't going to deal with them, particularly the children, then we should.

The lack of empathy around this situation, I find quite astonishing.

I only half read it earlier and thought she was actually apologising for being a millionaire that sat in a room of millionaires that between them could save a lot of poor people's lives if they did more than just try to get back into the limelight with some patronising comments to the media. I'd have a bit of respect for that. I'd have even more respect if she said "you know what, I made a lot of money off those two songs people bought and actually I could just live a modest lifestyle and give away all my excess money to people who are desperate". She's entitled to the opinions here and she claims she wants to raise some awareness, I could be cynical and say that perhaps she was worried people would forget who she was if she didn't go on a bit of a crusade, but if she raises money without constantly being in the public's face then I'll be very wrong in my cynicism. So I won't say it. Yet. Apart from the fact I did about 4 times in this comment.

Everyone on this forum thinks she was talking b*llocks.

Oh yeah, it is absolutely fine to speak for everyone. It's pretty fun.

We're all paedophiles too.

As someone else said, going over there is probably quite emotional. However every single one of them could have a proper place to live if they'd just claimed asylum in the first or even second country they went through. There is absolutely no need for these people to be doing what they are doing. It also skews the immigration argument.

Personally I think we have an obligation to help some of those that have been displaced by war. We do not have an obligation to economic migrants or those at the jungle. They already have a safety net, they chose not to use it.

The Welsh and the Scottish could reasonably seek asylum in England. The Irish and people from Guernsey at a stretch.

Amazing how when any celeb speaks out about an injustice they are deemed unts on here.

If an ordinary Joe spoke out it wouldn't get any coverage so fair play to Lily Allen (who I don't really have ny time for).

Wonder how many of you lot were up Joanna Lumley's arse when she spoke out for the Ghurkas.

Next time though I suggest she says 'I apologise on behalf of people in England who care, the rest of the country don't care if you live or die so I won't speak for them.

And while we are on the subject, let's get rid of the phrase virtue signalling which is just a s***e way to belittle people who go out of their way to help others.

Possibly because the Gurkhas have actually contributed something.

You are failing to distinguish between refugees and migrants. In the section of text I have highlighted, every single motivation you have described belongs to the latter group and none are adequate justifications for granting access to the country.

Due to Schengen, migrants are free to travel unchecked throughout most of mainland Europe. They can settle in any number of culturally rich, developed and, most importantly, safe countries. Yet so many of them choose to camp in the same squalid, violent corner of France that happens to be located at the entry point to the UK.

As Part Time James said:'she was worried people would forget who she was if she didn't go on a bit of a crusade'
Well I've never heard of her & from what she's saying it sounds like no-one else wants to know her anyway.
I've heard of Clive Allen. No relation I hope.
