But where did "being prepared to back yourself" get you?

Smashed round the back of the head when you weren't looking.

No one helped me and my brother-in-law all those years ago.... not even the police helped.

Your last sentence is absolutely spot on.... rely on no one but yourself in future and I would reaffirm my earlier advice... keep your mouth shut unless you want to invite trouble.

EDIT: I note your profile says you are a family man and retail manager.

You'll be a lot more use to your family as a retail manager.... that attack on you Saturday could have left you unable to look after your family and all just to shout out a few chants and banter.

It really isn't worth the grief.

That is sound advice Hoof but, as you experienced, you cant always legislate for stupid thuggery.
About 20 years ago i was walking from the picadilly line to the Victoria line at green park station during rush hour. Infront of me were three p*ssed up England supporters (Londoners) singing engerland engerland etc.. I just passed em by and went up to stand on the platform (one of the busiest on the tube network.)
They were still singing when they arrived on the platform and then pushed this girl who was about 5 foot tall towards the tracks. She went for them. Immediately i jumped in and a wrestling match ensued. I noticed that 1 of the hooligans was holding an empty bottle menacingly and i didnt have a free hand to stop him ..thankfully he put the bottle down but just used his free hand to aim slaps at the girl. After about 20 seconds (felt longer) i broke it up and got on the train with her. The 3 engerland fans then followed us onto the train, although 1 was trying to hold the other 2 back. They shouted racist names at the girl and spat at her, which was also hitting me all the way down to Brixton station (i wax supposed to get off at Victoria) - it was absolutely dusgusting. No-one helped us and atleast 250 people must have walked straight past. Next day at work i heard all about how tough some people were - they would have smacked em etc - why did i just allow myself to get spat at? Ironically, i was quite tough back then (although never a streetfighter) and reckon i could have taken out atleast one of them but the reality was i could easily have been rabbit punched and the girl would also have got a kick-in..so wrestling to break it up was probably quite wise.
But the reaction of some work colleagues did annoy me, claiming they were tough when i just knew they would also have been one of the 250 people who walked past...so i can relate to how swirdfish is feeling...keep your chinnup son, you were cowardly assaulted by a couple of thugs, got no backing (apart from the 2 girls) and then get more cowardly abuse on here...but we aint all like that.

I genuinely can't believe some of the responses on this forum to the op. One of your own was attacked by some thug and people are calling him names such as a pussy? Don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that. Yes he chanted 'stick your bubbles up your arse', so what?! Does that really warrant getting thumped? I've heard that at pretty much every ground I've gone to and it's very much the norm. As previously said, it's all part of the game and is just standard banter. I was on the platform and heard some commotion but couldn't quite see what was going on.

But why stand and chant with other Palace fans, I wouldn't EVER as I know most of the Palace fans would run away and watch you get a kick in

Palace fans have never been known as hard core or as fighting fans

Just another bit of advice, unless you are after some apres match agro don't use Norwood Junction,Selhurst Station is a far better option as away fans havn't heard of it and offers a good service to Croydon or back to Clapham Junction and London.

Top advice gerry.

I do feel sorry for Swordfish, but I hope he heeds my advice.

I forgot to mention my nasty experience with the spammers at the play off final at Cardiff.

After the game I got on a train to head back to Bristol with my brother-in-law.

The carriage we eventually got in had an Asian guy being abused by about 20 spammers p1ssed up and threatening him, calling him suicide and spitting in his face.

We quickly got hold of him and dragged him off the train and he reluctantly came with us sensing the danger of facing those thugs alone. We found a Transport Police Officer and he arranged for all 3 of us in a 1st class carriage to get home at no extra cost and then he went off to sort out the spammers.

I seriously think I saved that Asian guy's life as god knows how far they would have gone if he stayed with them on the journey back.

Even on the train going they were drunken arseholes at 10am in the morning FFS.

Walking back to East Croydon's not a bad idea either. Never had any problem there. I think there was once a woman so trollied she'd probably shat herself wanting to hug people, but she was probably one of our fans.

I realise it's quite a long walk for some, but if you look like a fat Jamie Vardy it might help shed some pounds.

I hope this is considered tongue in cheek SwordFish, I'm on your side and don't think you deserved all the crap you've been dealt on here.

The trouble with swordfish is that he changes his statements according to how much alcohol is inside him. His evidence is thus unreliable.

Is it possible that his own behaviour fell short of what is normal in a civilised society?

Did he not consider that his antics might have been intimidating to other rail users, including women and young children? What were the words of the chant he was singing?

Maybe he just fell victim to the violence he was helping to incite.

Daft comment. So what if he had a few, was silly, etc? HE WAS ASSAULTED. I hate it when victims are made out to be the offenders. Why can't he sing? It's a game of football in London FFS, not f^cking Syria. Okay, some might be more careful and shut-up, but he was a bit tipsy and didn't - I guess he may have been a bit foolish, but does that give someone the right to assault him? IT IS STILL ASSAULT.

I've got to say first and foremost, it shouldn't have happened. But I am surprised no one jumped in to help you I would have.

However if your singing at them you've made yourself a target, would you have got attacked if you hadn't ?

Not suggesting its your fault at all, but you did put a big target on your back.

Still can't believe no one helped you, disgusting. Mind you I got jumped and my partner stamped on by United fans at the cup final for nothing other than supporting Palace and no one helped me or her either. Even the old bill just stood back watching me try and fight 3 little dickheads off.

Can't believe this is still on going. Totally understand people who were there might not want to wade in and get a slap or arrested but to have a go at the OP the way some of you lot have is staggering. A few of the comments here are meant tongue in cheek but arguing with the OP and each other about it.. Seriously guys.. give your heads a wobble. I appreciate people are pretty pissed off that were lost to west ham (a game which on paper we should have won) on a soaking wet, cold dark October night. But turning on each other over sod all.. sort it out!

Really, where was that? That's one of the only things that's always really bugged me about our fans - that a lot of us are a bunch of pussies. There's a difference between being a hooligan and standing your own!

Have followed Palace for nearly 30 years and we are no different to any other club. At away games i always drink in pubs full of Palace and if there has been trouble which is not often then the Palace fans with me and around me have all backed each other up. Back in the 80's we had a few mobs that would stand there own against most other clubs, Whitehorse were no pussies and nor was the D30. There are still plenty of old faces that go but dont go looking for trouble anymore but would sure as hell back you if you were in trouble. Facts are if you want to act in a way that might cause someone to want to give you a slap then have your wits about you and possibly have a few mates who will back you up. Otherwise keep it shut.
