Yesterday reminded me of 2000/2001, last match of the season, Alan Smith had taken us down, it had been a dire match and the Holmesdale faithful started throwing their (now empty) season ticket wallets onto the pitch.

The sense of despair that afternoon was so palpable that you could have cut it with a knife - just like yesterday. But, hey ho, down we went and yet again we rebuilt, had all the fun of something to play for - promotion rather than a European place - and had some good times again.

Not what anyone was hoping for, but the Palace roundabout completes another turn.

No disrespect, Becky but I think the game you're talking about was at home to Wolves. Last home game of the season.
Me and my mate were there with our sons and we were amongst those who threw our season tickets at Smith.
He got sacked, Kember was made manager and we beat Pompey 4-2 in midweek and then Stockport 1-0 to secure safety.

Added to that, unless my memory is playing tricks, I remember running down to front to give Big Clint abuse because he didn't look interested that day. Rumours doing the rounds were that Spurs were interested and I told him to 'f*** off there then!'

This evening I got in touch with how I really feel about the result today. (It is still only 11pm here in San Francisco.). What feelings do we all have at this time? Humiliation? Anger? Frustration? Fear? Palace has been part of my family since 1905 at the beginning. And now we're tearing apart. The boos, the anger, the derisory chants. However, when you look at the situation or apportion blame there is one quality we mustn't forget. Compassion. Tonight as I was ruminating I felt the pain that the players must be feeling. OK so they were awful, but they are also human. Each one is trying hard but it's agony to keep trying and time after time screwing up. And Sam was genuinely 'shocked' too. He was shaken to his core. And of course all of us fans in varying degrees can't get the nightmare six minutes meltdown out of our heads. I'm a great believer in the cliche the truth will set you free but sometimes that truth is almost unbearable. It's during this hellish time of being a Palace fan, Chairman, Manager, Player that we all need to be compassionate toward each other and look to how we can support each other and not eviscerate and emasculate those we think are responsible for the nightmare. We can get through this together and not as finger pointing haters.

Brilliant post and totally true.
The players are, on paper good enough, but it's not played on paper, it's played in the head and this lot are now so mentally weak after a whole year of poor results, they're shot. AP was given too much time to turn it around and now it may be too late for Sam.
In most games over that year we acquitted ourselves well and were always, it seemed on the wrong side of the bounce or the decision. Trouble is though we kept losing no matter how well we played and never put a string of results together long enough to get confidence back. The cup run also blurred everyone's vision at a time we least needed it. Our complete problem is confidence and has been all season. Without it you're reactive, not proactive, slow to react, scared to take chances and keep the ball too long waiting for the safe option. The keeper is terrified and in turn he terrifies the defence and the midfield don't get forward to support Benteke because of fear of conceding . Benteke in turn gets stripped of confidence because he's always on his own and he starts to snatch at simple chances. Injuries this season have also been major ones with Wickham and Remy robbing us of competition for places up front. So many things have conspired against us that anyone would start to believe there's some kind of hex on the squad.
Above all you are right they are human and with some exceptions, because there's always some people only in it for the money, they do care and are hurting.
A leader is required and the next team IMO must be made up of all of this seasons new signings and anyone that's not been involved in this year long run, plus anyone in form. What's that leave us with.
Speroni, PVA, Sakho, Tompkins, Schlupp, Kaikai, Townsend, Remy, Macca, Luka, Wilf, Benteke. Bit gung-ho, but we don't have enough defenders.
Last point, I think we've totally underestimated the effect Papa's near death experience had on the squad.

This thread is a pity party. We are good enough. Much better than Sunderland in terms of ability and should be around tenth. These players are disgraceful pussies. Cowards. They gave in to fear. This game is about thousands of supporters escaping their dreary lives to enjoy success through their heroes on the playing field. And these gladiators get VERY WELL PAID to feed the fantasy. We are traveling and paying to see Russell Crowe and the Carthinian hoardes defeat Skippio Africanus's Roman soldiers against the odds. This part of the movie's narrative is about escaping relegation. But we get to watch COWARDS. Hennessey should had EXPLODED onto that first cross and PUNCHED THE F#CK out of that ball. And he's not the only one to criticise, but he set the tone: a cowardly, limp-wristed, pussy attempt to clear the ball that gave me the impression he was afraid of hurting himself. C O W A R D S. AlL of them. Not worthy of my time and support. So stop this faggot pussy pity party and call a spade a spade: their COWARDS, PUSSIES, L O S E R S.

Indeed, Mo, you are correct it was the last HOME game..... and the report sounds all too familiar:

And then when you see the video of Mark Wealleans and that amazing tribute yesterday, it really puts things into context.

Whatever happens....we have the best fans!

We lost 4-0 to the worst team in the league at home I can understand the frustration among the fans we have very much under acheived this season the players don't deserve to wear the shirt I would be saying to the fans keep it up every home game because its a disgrace
