Since their failed attempt to re-silence Goncalo Amaral, the lead investigator into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who had previously written a book regarding his suspicion of Kate and Gerry in the disappearance of Maddie there seems to be re-surfacing rumours/conjecture regarding their involvement. (That was a long paragraph with not enough pause for breath!)

Maybe not picked up by the mainstream media yet (although I believe the Metro published an article on it today which I haven't read) but it was interesting to note that the supreme court has declared that Kate and Gerry have never been proved innocent. I don't think that's a shock to anyone, as I have read a few articles (that I am not declaring are 100% reliable) that the McCanns weren't particularly compliant in the investigation and refused to take lie detector tests, washed evidence etc.

Of course, I make no allegations myself and certainly wouldn't be prudent to spread tittle tattle on an internet forum. All I am repeating here is my recent observation that the spotlight seems to be gradually turning back on them (rightly or wrongly) and I wonder whether anyone else here had noticed this?

I wondered whether we're likely to start to hear more on this from the mainstream media in coming weeks.

I've always had a problem with the amount of focus and funding this got in comparison to all the other missing children in the world, and that it seemed that the McCanns were somewhat neglectful even if they played no part in the 'disappearance'. Of course, it's not very nice if they are completely innocent and have lost a child, but it's always been a very odd case.

I really don't get this massive obsession with the McCanns and the conspiracy theories that they somehow had something to do with it.

As a parent, I cannot imagine the grief and pain they have gone through every day since she went missing. If there is genuine cause to believe they had something to do with it they should be investigated. If not, they should be left in peace to deal with their turmoil/loss in whatever way they see fit. All these stories, abuse and innuendo that goes their way is just cruel and unnecessary.

Well by some accounts Amaral was suspicious and was prohibited from investigating them fully, hence the supreme court declaring that they weren't found innocent (albeit not found guilty either of course) due to insufficient investigation.

They left their kids alone in the apartment while they went out on the lash. If I left my kid at home on his own tonight and went down the pub, I wonder how quickly social services would be round....

They may not be guilty of her disappearance, but they are 100% guilty of child neglect, and the fact they've never been done for that continues to do my head in.

Yes, that's my one "concrete" grievance really (provided the well documented reports are correct). And to have had so much funding poured into the investigation when other, seemingly less neglectful parents have unfortunately lost their children and not had anywhere near as much help.

Aside from that, my post above is just a reflection of my observation that some smaller media outlets are starting to raise questions again. As I say, I make no allegations myself on that score so hopefully I'm not going to get any flack for merely mentioning my observation.

Never really minded Terry in Minder. Trustworthy, if a little volatile.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Arguably, in Portugal, not fast enough.

I think the point is that maybe they suffered enough, and are no longer a threat, due to having had their daughter probably kidknapped, raped and probably murdered, and her corpse well hidden. Plus, their neglect, isn't really all that unusual, if someone was popping back every 30 minutes or so to check on them.

Parents, everywhere, do this or something similar.

Plenty of parents, leave their kids with friends, family or neighbours, despite the fact those are the prime candidates for abusing kids. But we don't regard that as neglect if when it turns out that they're a nonce.

They were unlucky. Very unlucky.

They went for dinner 50m away. You make it sound like they went out, getting pished, a few miles away.

It's not a decision I would have made but it would not constitute neglect. And they are paying for it now in a way most parents fortunately won't even have to imagine.

The attention given to their case did seem disproportionate compared to other missing children, but other than not being particularly likeable, I haven't seen anything to justify the suspicion and scrutiny they have come under.
