it started with Wickham and Remys injuries, followed by Souare, and then Pardews inability to defend a winning margin. He showed against Southamptonthat we could defend, but then went back to crazy lineups. I hate Allardyce, sitting there chewing gum while the team flounders. Hopefully he has enough new and returning players to turn it around in time.

Pardew openly admitted he always wanted to go for the win. He is actually on record as saying 'I'm not interested in draws'.
Allardyce on the other hand has repeatedly banged the drum 'if you don't think you can win it, for Gods sake don't lose it'
THIS could be the simple difference

Turning point will be the commanding performance against Middlesborough, breathing confidence into the team and kick starting a solid run of performances that will see us stay up.

Just thought it would be good to bump this up to show how quickly things change. And to show that I was right (so far), although I am not sure about the commanding performance bit.

I think there were two tuning points; the Sunderland 0-4 with the fans reaction (plus SP's afterwards) followed by the two week break.
The Sunderland match was when we hit rock bottom.
In the two week break this gave time for crucial training ground work and to get what is turning out to be two key players in Luka and Sakho to get to match fitness. The overall level of fitness is the team has of course improved in the process.

Bring back Brolin

Agreed....but I would go even further than that. Sam has had to make some tough decisions, but players who perhaps thought their places were guaranteed have now been dropped and better alternatives implemented. Ledley, Delaney, Lee, Campbell, Fryers,
Kelly, Flamini

Big Sam is proving his worth. He is not afraid to make the changes needed to keep us up.

Also agreed but I do miss McArthur.

back to the original turning point (not the current one which I hope isn't a false dawn).
isn't the problem to do with change and perception?
like many people here I've supported the club for about 30 years and have followed it since the late 60s.
We've always been a medium sized 2nd division outfit that aspires to being a middle sized 1st division club.
I guess we're looking to become more like Stoke City. They've never won the league but they have spent extended periods in the top flight.
So for me the turning point was when I stopped expecting defeat / relegation and began to believe that we had no chance of being relegated. That point came after Pardew took us to 10th and bought a load of expensive players. I remember saying to myself "there's no chance we'll get relegated this coming season".
What an idiot, I should have known. As soon as I allowed my expectations to change we've struggled.
The turning point has nothing to do with how the club is doing but only how it's doing in relation to your expectations.
