not really as brave as a Southern rail ticket inspector if you ask me.

maybe risking your own life gets bravery medals. But there shouldnt be medals or accolades for killing people. No matter what army you are in.

That is usually how it works, it is not the act of killing that is rewarded rather the danger they put themselves in.

Does that apply to the people they were fighting? We're the Luftwaffe pilots flying the bombers heroes, the Zulu's at Rouke's Drift, the young Argentine recruits fighting at Goose Green. Its the actions in which you transcend the situation around you.

My hero is Lisa Potts, the young woman who protected small children in her care, from a lunatic with a machete, despite having no skills to speak of, or weapon of her own.

We don't regard them as heroes, because they fought on the other side. Some people regard the IRA as heroes, they aren't, but you could make an argument that they were. After all they were fighting against a far superior foe, with better training, equipment and numbers and many died for that 'cause'.

Really? Tim Parry, the gentleman from Thornton Heath murdered at Victoria Station, all the civilians killed in indiscriminate bombing?

Heroes do not leave bombs in department stores and pubs with the specific intent of maiming and killing innocent people. People who are not involved with the "cause".

That is the work of cowards. Abject cowards.

Planted bombs in packed shopping centres and areas full of people not from Ireland who had probably never been to Ireland and quite frankly probably couldn't give a flying f*** about the 'troubles' but it's ok ..they were hero's because they saved many lives by phoning ahead of them being detonated with a warning to evacuate...

Bravo!

Didn't say I believed that, but that you could make them out to be heroes for that.

Well that is the point isnt it. From the Republican viewpoint Britain was occupying their country and its population "couldnt give a flying f***" as you put it.

Hence the intention to attack civilians to make the price of that occupation higher. The intention was to weaken Britains resolve to stay in London and the peace process took place because the IRA came to the view that it would never bomb the British out of Ireland - and the British Government realized it would never defeat the IRA.

I understand the fundamental reasons. They come over here and hurt us and create that fear . When I say couldn't give a flying f*** I mean it's not something which affects them, many of them had probably never been.to.Ireland, didn't know anyone living there not meant as in they didn't care what happened to them in that sense.

The rest of the world would disagree, so who would you consider a hero ?

What makes you a hero in my eyes, a man to be looked up to and respected, is that you've seen the worst that humanity has to offer, walked through it all, carried yourself with decorum and modesty, and still remained great father and inspiration to your kids.

That's what makes a man a hero.

Usual left wing 'analysis'. British troops were sent there to protect the Catholics from Protestant attacks. The IRA then attacked the troops.

Its not "left Wing Analysis" I said it was the Republican point of view. Because it was the Republican point of view. I didnt say it was right or that I agreed with it but it was the IRA's policy throughout the Troubles.

You really can be a t*** sometimes Hedgehog

I think you made an entirely fair point and I didnt meant to sound like I was interpreting it as people being uncaring. The point I was trying to make was that the IRA wanted to make the conflict something happening close to home rather than it happening "overseas"
