It is literally just to wind THEM up! Not aimed at the wider community. I've been around since the beginning of the rivalry and it is one game in a blue moon. I refuse to believe that this is real homophobia when you can't hear any anti-gay slurs elsewhere when Palace play.
I bet you anything you could have a rainbow flag with an eagle on it saying 'Glad to be Gay' in the Palace end and receive zero, or practically zero, abuse from Palace fans. They would laugh more than anything I am sure.

I'm just thinking there'll be plenty of other reasons to laugh at them next season. No reason to bother with this avenue any more.

Just because homophobic chanting may not be directed at 'real gay' people as you say, or that people don't resort to physical abuse, doesn't make it any less homophobic. Chanting such as that often seen in games against Brighton only serves to further reinforce the stigma of being gay in the football community, and as the statement says, offend not just Brighton fans, but Palace fans as well. It's about time that as a club and a fanbase we grew up and stopped using such purile and immature insults.

100% agree with this statement. Leaving aside the fact that homophobic abuse is wrong and should end, the fact that (assuming we survive) Palace vs. Brighton will be in the harsh glare of the Premier League next season means that any abusive songs are going to get a lot more attention than they have in the past.

Shouting 'bender' at a straight Brighton fan 50metres away is not quite at the same level as attacking two guys for holding hands, is it? I get that it must make some fans feel uncomfortable but in the bigger scheme of things it's just two hours of some people being a bit immature and daft and some stupid but but away from that they are back down the pub or at home and probably couldn't give a hoot about others' sexuality. I think what I am trying to say is 'don't let it upset you out of proportion to what it really is'. It's not banter. It is offensive. For two hours. And that is the point. It's meant to be. Was only a matter of time before this got out of hand and people were banging the gay / pc drum. Little Britains David in a mock Brighton kit, two Brighton players kissing on sky are just two of the things popping up (pardon the pun) all over social media . It's meant tongue in cheek, but obviously some people are going to find it a bit tiresome. Some will want to be offended simply to crelate a bit of drama. However someone did point out the other day if someone did a mock of a monkey in a palace shirt with a sakho haircut no one would say it was banter

Well, plenty of Spurs fans themselves refer to 'The Yid Army' so I don't think they are being anti-semitic. Intent is everything. If Palace chanting was intent on targeting the gay community then 'yes' it is homophobia. But i don't think the chanting is. It's directed at Brighton fans. I wouldn't miss it if it stopped and have never indulged myself in the chanting but I see this as too accusatory.
