Another old chant/song from the late 60s has just come to mind:

E's 'ere, e's there,
E's every f*cking where,
Roger 'oy, Roger 'oy.

I think I read somewhere that he was quite a religious person, so I'm not sure how well that went down with him.

On the internet there's a wonderful picture of Roger proudly showing off his little Hillman car with personalised number plate. Happy innocent days.

I prefer the Vince Hilaire version myself!!! But that's just an age thing I suppose!!

Being able to put a bet on at the back of the old holmesdale where they had a bookies hut. They had a tuck shop too where you could by sweets and crisps and a hot bovril.
Also remember the Palace lottery cards, i had a round and got a fee for each ticket sold. Someone from the club would go door knocking to see who wanted the tickets each week and then i was given a list of houses to knock on and sell them. Big winners were announced in the Match programme. I often subbed myself the lottery ticket takings to go to away games as my parents were always broke.

I saw Palace player Ian Philip (Scot like many of them in the late 60's) on the 68 bus on the way to play in a match. I always went stupidly early, but it shows footballers then didn't have the extended time together before matches.
I also sat on a bus one weekday behind John McCormack & children. Now, can you imagine Wilf or Benteke on a Croydon bus these days?
