Doubt any of us are in a position to pass judgement on his state of mind after something like that has happened unless you've suffered something similar. I'm not going to underestimate the impact something like that would have and like people before have said, he's a very rich man and can afford to make such decisions.

The fact that he has left prior to a survival bonus being paid (this is all guesswork, surely the board would protect the money as they did with Pulis) may suggest something - you can see in these circumstances it being paid early and him being wished well.

Genuine question. Has he not had the bonus yet. Will he still get it? Assuming he will but what are the t and c of it

No idea but I'm guessing that they did a similar thing that they did with Pulis whereas he had to be in the job till a certain date (which he wasn't) so we can reasonably guess that date is similar too. It's all guessing but no more than 99.9% of the b*llocks I read on here every day.

I would imagine that it depends on how generous the board feel. I'd guess that, after Pulis, the contract was pretty water tight to stop a payment being made prior to his departure.

Not sure any of us will know for sure unless the board or Sam care to mention it. Or it goes to court.

If he has quit football management for good, whether this news has anything to do with it or not, I wish him a long and happy retirement.

And if he does turn up at one of our relegation rivals (Brighton?) later this year, I’m sure no one will hold it against him, considering what he’s been through.

Refusing to pay his bonus on a technicality in circumstances like these is not exactly something that would make me feel proud of the club.

When Sam arrived and into the first two months a fair few of us thought he looked jaded and maybe had lost the fire in his belly. He got that second wind thankfully to help us stay up but maybe the first Sam we saw is where he is at really. Good luck to him and a bloody good decision i reckon. He's probably got 15-20 years left. Enjoy yerself Big fella.

here here to that

Don't get me wrong, my suggestion is that it's far more likely that we paid the bonus under these circumstances than didn't pay it.

I'm suggesting that his departure at this stage is unlikely down to plain retirement when he stands to pocket £2 million for a few more weeks in the job unless there is a very good reason for the board to pay early - which it seems there is. Why take the job based on a massive bonus then quit so close to getting it? Wouldn't make sense unless A) they paid early or B) they didn't protect the bonus in the contract which seems very unlikely given what happened with Pulis. Guessing A seems more likely.

Heard this morning that Sam may have lost a close friend in the Manchester bombing, which may have caused him to take stock of his life and decide that at 62, life is too short for the stresses that go with football management.

I'll admit I wasn't keen when he was appointed, but he changed my opinion of him.

I was also disappointed on Tuesday evening, but he has gone up further in my estimation by the calm, measured statement he made that chose to focus on him and his family rather than publicly using Manchester, and his friend, as a reason for that re-evaluation of his life.

Good luck Sam - whether in retirement, punditry or even back in management in a year or two if the pipe and slippers are not all they're cracked up to be.

I hate to seem to be churlish but I'm wondering if the death of his friend was just a co-incidence.

The attack on Manchester Arena happened at about 10:30pm on Monday night with no details released of fatalities for a couple of days yet Sam arranged a meeting with Parish in London on the Tuesday morning, cleared out his desk at Beckenham later that day and released his statement on Tuesday afternoon.

If the death of a friend was a major part of his thinking wouldn't Parish have suggested that he sleep on it for a few days rather than rush into anything?

No! An acquaintance died and he resigned the next morning, like you do. And he didn’t even consider the millions of pounds he may be owed. That’s what happened. Show some respect etc.

Perhaps he has done, which is why the club has not commented publicly on the matter. I don't suppose it will change the outcome.
