Retirement and wasted talent

A discussion about Sam on the BBS got me thinking about the principle of retirement. Sam has so much experience of sorting football clubs out, even at 62, he has so much to offer the footballing world. My neighbours are extremely good scene of crime investigators (now retired), and I just think it's a real waste of talent. Then two deaths in the news. Terry Butcher's son and this Navy Officer-see link (retired) [Link] How can a submarine officer, who has undergone some very expensive training, retire at 35 ? Terry Butcher's son was also 35 and a retired Captain in the Royal Artillery. [Link] I despair sometimes of all those years of training/experience, gone to waste. Or am I missing something ? How can a submarine officer, who has undergone some very expensive training, retire at 35 ?

Terry Butcher's son was also 35 and a retired Captain in the Royal Artillery.

I despair sometimes of all those years of training/experience, gone to waste.

Or am I missing something ? (probably)

TalkSh!te seem to think Leicester might be interested. Based on his remarks about the Scotland job it would seem to be to soon for him and in any case an international job might have suited him better - he'd have been great for Scotland. Perhaps he'll end up in charge of Wales. ============ The Ferret ============

TalkSh!te seem to think Leicester might be interested. Based on his remarks about the Scotland job it would seem to be to soon for him and in any case an international job might have suited him better - he'd have been great for Scotland.

Perhaps he'll end up in charge of Wales.

Some of us are very happy to have retired, though it does pain one to see the calibre of some of our replacements in the world of work. Retiring at 35 does seem pretty silly unless you are rich and lazy. If you are 62, depending on your career, you may well be stressed out and knackered. Kids coming in as bosses with silly 'new' ideas that have been tried and failed so many times before just make things worse. Football management is different maybe, but nonetheless extremely stressful, and it's not as if football managers can't afford to retire if they want to. Having said that, I hope Sir Roy carries on for a couple of seasons! Most actors, on the other hand, are often not in work at all. With very few exceptions their careers are slow to take off, and in many cases never do. So many can't afford to retire. IMO - talent and experience are intangibly linked. When you are younger and so therefore less experienced you may have the talent but not the experience or wherewithal to how best apply it. When you get through that you go through a period where you are reasonably confident - that you know as least as much as the other Guy or you can give him a good run for his money. There are many examples where people try to jump the transition period from just raw talent, without gathering the necessary experience or life lessons - and this is often seen/perceived as arrogance - I might add rightly or wrongly. Time to retire in my mind comes when you deep down no longer believe you have the wherewithal to come out on top of the other Guy. IMO - talent and experience are intangibly linked.

When you are younger and so therefore less experienced you may have the talent but not the experience or wherewithal to how best apply it.

As an individual I can relate to that - when I was younger I could clearly see some of the things that I am successfully delivering today, but never had the confidence to speak up due to my own perceived lack of experience and respect to my elder peers.

When you get through that you go through a period where you are reasonably confident - that you know as least as much as the other Guy or you can give him a good run for his money.

To my mind Roy is nearing the retirement point - but Saturday proved there is life in the old dog yet so not quite there - whereas Sam is at the crossroads and needs to decide if he wants to put all that talent and experience on the line to achieve he's perceived personal ambitions.

Deep - yes but that is my experience, albeit that I am in the middle ground rather than the retirement point.

I agree with the OP. Having just retired myself it is almost criminal how we are wasting the talents of the older generation. Many large corporations spend a fortune training their staff and then let that knowledge walk out the door at retirement. Not everyone wants to keep working but how about offering occasional short term work to cover for staff absence or busy periods. I used to bring back a guy for 3 months a year during our busy time. It was a skilled job that you could not hire a short term temp for. I would not want to stop the young getting their chance but if you needed a temp for 2 weeks woudln't an old hand familiar with the company processes be ideal? The NHS has a "Nurse bank" which allows the staff to tell the NHS what days they are available to work. I guess I am arguing for zero hours contracts but in this case the employee drives it not the employer. One more point
