We're currently short on centre-backs.

Another 3 or 4 should see us right.

Ask me about Ronald de Boer.

I'm not sure we really want to extend but we surely can't disrupt the club so much by releasing them all.

Parrot

If it was me I'd do the following:

Wayne Hennessey - Let go
Jules - Keep for one season
Damo - Let go
Ward - Season extension
Kelly - Let go
Yohan - 2 year extension
Macca - 2 year extension
Bacary Sako - Let go (unless he proves himself by the summer)
Lee - Let go
Lapado - Depends what the manager thinks.

So that's 5-6 spaces freed up by the summer.

Assuming Maaca and Cabaye want to stay, as either or both may want to go home.

Assuming they want to stay for a year or two I'd let the others go as above. Although if they want to go I doubt we can let that many others go as both will need replacing with quality. The key is getting them both to extend.

That frees up 4-6 spaces plus the already empty squad space equals 5-7 spaces.

Next sign two strikers and two keepers. All if possible in Jan. So three of the above need to be moved on or bought out of contracts at Xmas.

3-4 spaces left to fill over the summer plus possible replacements for our two loans if we can't extend there loans.

Assume two spaces can be filled with promoting development players and then that leaves another two players to buy and two to loan.

It might sound like football manager but as all of there contracts are nearly up it's not actually a tall order. If decent replacements and be found in budget.

And actually if implemented we'd have a very good squad - best ever for next season. Key thing is getting Cabaye and Macca signed up and getting the two loans extended as both are decent.

I agree with a lot of ^^^^^ that only I see next summer as potentially the hardest of the lot whether we survive or not. If we survive we have the issues of not only Cabaye but also Cheek and Mensah. The first 2 speak for themselves but Mensah is who I see as our longer term level of RB rather than Ward. Although with a lot of dross leaving we're freeing up places and money on wages, we also have to aim to add quality rather than the Pardew quality level, and we don't seem very good at finding many of those at prices that'll bring a few of them in.

Apart from Freedman having a successful time finding players that'll cost an average of championship cost British players we're going to need a lot, and I mean most of, the following you mention to happen.

Cabaye and Jimmy extending.

Cheek and Mensah staying again for free.

If not that's 4 1st team places plus the additions we need before looking at bolstering, on what, £45 mil? Big big summer coming and a lot of background work to do to come out of that strong, which is why I said if next season is our time then I'd accept it. That's a big task ahead, no doubt about it.

Yes agree the only way we're gonna afford to kick the squad on is if Cabaye and Jimmy sign extensions and hopefully the loans stay. Although we could if needed find new loans but likely won't land on our feet with two such talented ones.

Only way it would work is on a pay as you play deal.

He's far from over rated.

Agree, but the Weetabix + glass observation is well founded.

We really can't tell what type of player we will be looking for in January. If we are dead and buried we'll need to look at good championship players. If we are bottom but in touch it's a tough call as to whether to gamble on spending big and being saddled with it if we go down. If we have somehow got out of the relegation then it must be time to invest big on a striker and attacking midfielder.

Gk + striker are urgent... everyone knows... and our feet will thus be dangled over the fire price wise.

Ok other places can always be improved especially both full backs, but we will have to wait as our coffers will be emptied by our priority needs.
