I find it incredible that the game Tuesday isn’t on on tv. When you think of the w*** fest they produce for games like Man U vs Liverpool, I don’t think they realise how bigger rivals we are! They will find out tues.

I think you are overestimating how interested the rest of football is by our little local rivalry. Let's face it neither club has ever been fashionable or successful, and any aggro is usually handbags. It's not exactly Celtic V Rangers!

That fixture is no longer particularly interesting now that Rangers are s***.

Its only real significance is that it is, as ever, an excuse for bigotry and hate.

I think it depends on how old you are, my first Palace game was in 1963 and left school in summer 1974 and in all that time we didn't play Brighton once, nor do I remember any Brighton fans at school.

Couple of years ago I was working on a site and sparked up a conversation with a guy who turned out to be a Brighton fan. He was mid 30's,came from a family of BHA fans and reckoned their biggest rivalry was now with Cardiff.
I still think they hate us deep down thou. Can't wait!

Most people who aren't supporters of either team look at it as a manufactured rivalry and even a previous manager or two was seemingly unaware of it

It has a traceable history, is not based just on accidents of geography (as most are) and is certainly real enough (check out NSC and the BBS, if not here as well). Holloway's comments made him look a bit of a mug and if he made them whilst managing one of Arsenal/Tottenham, Millwall/West Ham, City/United, Liverpool/Everton, etc. he'd have been put straight, but we're just too nice.

Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing!

The point that I was making was that the rivalry seemed to be relatively unknown outside of the two sets of fans. TV commentators in the past have mentioned that it is a most unusual rivalry as the clubs are two counties apart so it's hardly surprising that neutrals view it as daft as a rivalry between Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest would be as they are the same distance apart as Palace and Brighton and cross county lines too.

I know that you are I have greatly differing views on this subject but personally I think that a rivalry that started over 40 years ago because our two managers hated the sight of each other should have fizzled out when both managers left yet half of the "haters" weren't even born at the time.

I wonder how many of the hate brigade still hate Germans for what they did 70 years ago

It is a bit weird, because geographically they are not that close (although they are the closest non-London team, bar Crawley). Normally, football rivalries that are not close in proximity are due to football hooliganism i.e. Leeds/Millwall, some geographical border i.e. Bristol City/Cardiff or competitively i.e. Man Utd/Arsenal. Ours is not really any of those things.

To be honest, though, I was always told it started way before then when a lot of Londoners holidayed in Brighton, and the locals didn't like it.

Yep, I've been at every Palace / Brighton match since 1976, including the Stamford Bridge cup replay. Apart from one incident in Brighton due to my p1ssed-up and mouthy mate I have personally never had any trouble, and from my direct observation what trouble there has been has been exaggerated.
