Before bed last night, our youngest suddenly ordered us to write a letter to the Elves. He wanted a simple-yet-ironic question asked on his behalf: is god real?

We agreed -- his mum and I -- to not send the letter. It's good handwriting practice and we'll tell him Elves only answer letters from children.

But obviously he's gonna need an answer soon. We are somewhere between atheists and agnostics on the faith spectrum -- although sometimes I wonder.

Anyway, how should the Elves respond?

He said Elves.

The answer is that he moves in mysterious ways.

The words you chose will be your own - preferably typed so that he does not recognise Mum's or Dad's writing - perhaps along these lines. Dear Youngest Ginger, Thank you for your question. God is real. To people on Earth he appears in Spirit, and those through whom he works. The thought about asking your question (and which helpers) to ask came into your mind. We hope you and your Family enjoy Christmas, and send Love to you and all of them.

Dear youngest ginger pubic wig,

It does seem possible that God exists, if you are part of that psychological thought process, that people can be better off believing in something than in nothing even without evidence, however untrue that something may be.

Best wishes

Head Elf

Its ok to say you don't know for sure, and that its for each person to explore and decide. No one can tell you this cosmic truth; its something you can only ever ascertain for yourself.

Problem is, if God exists, isn't communing with pagan spirits (elves) a sin?

I'd go with Neil deGrasse Tyson's stance, it was for the tooth fairy but it works here too:

Children use their imaginations all of the time — for instance, when they play make-believe with toys, Tyson said. They can use their imagination for things where imagination belongs, but not [on] some hoax perpetrated by adults on children.

I just went with "don't be daft" personally.

Optimistic as ever

I tell him that all the time but his hunt for theological certainty would appear to know no bounds and his exploration has taken him to a penpal correspondence with The Elves. (in whom Mrs Wig wishes for him to have absolute belief)
