Is it true there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on earth.
I think it must be bollox but I know there are millions of stars.
I saw it on the box and them dudes know they're s*** ( if I could understand all of it).

Yeah, check out some Brian Cox, always explains things in Layman's but also has enough interesting things for hardcore astro-enthusiasts.

I also thought it was that there are more stars than molecules on Earth but I may be wrong!

(edit: there are more years left living in complete nothingness after the last star "burns out" than molecules on earth, the grain of sand thing seems to be a more true number)

Stars in universe on order of 10^24

Grains of sand on Earth approx 7.5 x 10^18

The number of stars therefore exceeds the number of grains of sand by at least five orders of magnitude.

Kornreich used a very rough estimate of 10 trillion galaxies in the universe. Multiplying that by the Milky Way's estimated 100 billion stars results in a large number indeed: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars

They said, if you assume a grain of sand has an average size and you calculate how many grains are in a teaspoon and then multiply by all the beaches and deserts in the world, the Earth has roughly (and we're speaking very roughly here) 7.5 x 1018 grains of sand, or seven quintillion, five hundred quadrillion grains.
i.e less than stars.

To put matters into perspective:
This is when Blatner hits us with his sucker punch. Yes, he says, the number of stars in the heavens is "an unbelievably large number," but then, very matter-of-factly, he adds that you will find the same number of molecules "in just ten drops of water."

The Universe could be infinite, whatever that means in reality. That could mean more stars than on all the beaches on all the planets.

do we know what % of the stars we look at are still there right now (given the time it takes for their light to reach earth?)

Of the ones we can see in the sky at night, almost all of them would still be there. Stars like our sun live for billions of years, and even those in other galaxies which we can observe will only be a few million light years away (how long it takes their light to reach us).

Were any star in our vicinity to explode in to a supernova, we would definitely know about it. It could even sweep Earth out of the Sun's orbit, leaving us all falling through empty space!

Or maybe it was a manifestation of “You’re sh*t - and you know you are”

BTW I saw the thread title and assumed it would be a homage to the performers of the classic single “Magic Fly”. Sadly not.

Haha

I think you can look at it two ways. You can worry, or you can see it as a further example of how incredible it is that life on earth exists.

In only a few hundred years, a mere moment in the infinite expanse of cosmic time, we have gone from being totally blind as to what is occurring above us, to understanding that our planet orbits one of a hundred billion stars, in a galaxy which is but a grain of sand in the universe which we can now see.

We can see how, just as space can create planets and moons and suns, it can destroy ruthlessly and brutally. We live a perilous existence, but even teetering on a small bit of rock, we have achieved immense amounts, and have stared back at the Universe in wonder and amazement
