I'm not getting into any Clattenburg debate because as sure as night follows day it will end up in vitriol amidst yet another Willo thread. In the interests of HOL I will refrain from commenting on the barbs aimed in the direction of a certain referee much as I would like to offer a riposte.

Are you sure you are not an MP, you never answer the question. I do not want you to talk about Clattenburg, but you have now posted yet again about the idiot.

You brought Clattenburg into the debate hence my retort.
Let's NOT turn this into a Willo/Clattenburg thread please.
Let's get back to VAR.Thanks

....and again, ad nauseum. My debate was about bringing good refs out of retirement as fourth officials but you seem to have been side-tracked from that.

Eaglecoops

I was aghast at your "Under-Egging" of the qualities of Collina and Clattenburg hence my retort.

With regard to your suggestion about "Retired referees", I do feel it has value. I'm not sure if this has been the case in respect of rugby and cricket.Certainly with cricket all referrals lead to decisions based on FACT within agreed parameters so no subjective decisions which is at variance with VAR in football.

The parameters for VAR have been laid down eg Whether a goal should stand, penalty decisions, red cards etc etc, so they don't cover each and every incident and scenario.

At the end of the day it will be down to interpretations of referees and subjective decisions but I look forward to seeing how it works.

Don't we have goal line technology for that? The ref's watch buzzes, it's a goal.

I wasn't thinking about that.

Evidently when a goal is scored there will be a review to ascertain whether there was any infringement leading up to it which could result in it being disallowed.More subjective decisions except I suspect in the case of some clear-cut offside scenarios.

This could be interesting on how back they go. A handball that won the ball on the half way line before the pass (the only one) that then went to the goalscorer? or the goalscorer fouls to win the ball then involved in a one-two then scores?

Well that will kill the euphoria of scoring if you have to wait another 45 seconds to confirm whether it counts

Consider the scenario :

Ball enters net
Silence from the crowd pending review.
Message on big screen after 60 secs "GOAL - You may now celebrate".

Just a thought !

Will only be used for goals, penalties and straight red cards.

Indeed. I am not 100% certain of the parameters set for such a scenario.
Also the wording says that VAR is to ensure that "No CLEARLY wrong decisions are made....."Need to understand what precisely this means in practical terms.
Awaiting a call-back from someone who will know. The devil lies in the detail !
