Of course their religion is going to be highlighted by the non Muslim majority.

Interestingly, we never make that jump with serial killers (who are almost entirely white). Yeah, there is a problem with Muslim grooming gangs in the UK, I don't think there anything untrue about that - But its not really significant that they're Muslims per se, any more than being Catholic is significant to crimes committed by the Mafia - Organised crime tends to always be along familiar and ethnic lines. But the problem isn't because they're Muslim.

Not in the US. In the American Mafia, being Sicilian was only a requirement until around the 30s. Outside of Italy these organisations tend to be referred to as the Mafia, and overseas they're certainly less distinct (although a lot of what people call the Mafia are actually N'drangheta)

As you suggested, they are working together because of close association but began in one region, created by one nationality that then spread to other countries via mass migration.
