Kelly and Schlupp are both very reluctant to walk onto the ball and cross it first time.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

I watched Dwight Gayle's movement in the box just before his two goals in that famous 3-3 draw with Liverpool at SP. It was very clever and made the spaces for his strikes. Benteke just doesn't have that intelligence in his play - in fact it comes across as sheer disinterest sometimes.

the most i would now offer Benteke is a 20 minute stretch at the end of a game. And even then , only a game that was looking finished for whatever reason. Us trouncing the opposition or vice versa. Basically if we need 11 top players playing out of their skin there is no place for Benteke. the guy is a 30 million quid liability.

My comment wasn't just about last night and certainly wasn't just about the first 45. Its a general comment and as I stated. Ive been banging on about it for ages. Even while he was at Liverpool I could see how poor his positional play and work rate were. The fact he gets signalled out is because he is so f***ing lazy. Yet come the final whistle he is moaning to everyone around him. He needs to stop and take a hard look at himself. His career is going backwards and he needs to address it. Also, for someone who is pretty crap with hold up play, his turn and pass was pretty decent for the first goal. I'm not saying he's brilliant, and I definitely want another striker, preferably someone who could start instead of him, but people really need to stop picking on him just because they don't like him. Any positive contribution is ignored and people only notice the negatives. Before Benteke it was Cabaye who was the waste of money and not worth it. The constant need to have someone to dig out every game is ridiculous. He's only one game removed from scoring and assisting away at Leicester! On the flipside, players like Luka and McArthur can get away with lapses of concentration and/or losing possession cheaply (both guilty of that against Arsenal a few times) with no one mentioning it. Still not entirely convinced we are playing to his strengths either. People (often rightly) are often annoyed by his movement in the box, but if you look back at the goals he has scored for us, they aren't normally from a player beating the full back and getting to the byline. Where Benteke seems to thrive is the early ball into the box from slightly deeper. Middlesbrough and Everton away last season and his goal at Leicester instantly come to mind. When it's a bit more flighted and from deeper, he seems to be much better at getting in between centre halves and winning the header. Slightly different, but Bournemouth and Liverpool away last season, two goals scored on the break with a quick and decisive delivery into the box where he was able to get free of a defender. Both Wilf and RLC have a tendency to overplay. Sometimes it works nicely, but the more I watch I think it's clear that Benteke isn't a 'fox in the box' who is going to find space in a crowd of players.

Gayle doesn't collect the ball on the halfway line, hold off a centre half, spin and play the ball out to the left wing to help set up the first goal like Benteke did. He doesn't shrug off a defender and set up Wilf at Leicester a couple of weeks ago or flick the ball on to Zaha to put him through on goal against Bournemouth. He's not perfect by any means, but too many people are asking him to be a player he's never really been. Right now he's contributing in terms of his hold up play, the way he brings the ball down on his chest and lays the ball off is superb. If we do want him to score goals, we've got to stop pretending he's Murray or Gayle. If he doesn't/can't make the same runs as those two, then let's try and give him the service he does like?

What, like put the ball right on his head while he stands till on the centre spot.
