If this turns out to be true the addition of Sakho to the squad will make us stronger. Like him or like him not he is better than anything we have in our under 23 squad. On that basis we live in hope.

Isn't it the way you sign one Sakho and then another 2 come along.

Like opposed to being in for other strikers?
This guy has played a lot, I mean A LOT for West Ham and he's barely managed to score a few goals in the PL in that gametime.

Pretty much ALL the other strikers the club has been linked with have scored more in much less playing time. Babacar, Niasse, Carillo, Hooper, Slimani, Afobe, Andone. All of them! Even the lads from Celtic were promising, cause at least they hadn't had the chance to be below average in a top league before! Like Diafra Sakho

Career stats (Flashscores.co.uk):

Diafra Sakho 154 apps, 62 goals

Khouma Babacar 140 apps, 40 goals
Benik Afobe 194 apps, 53 goals
Florin Andone 107 apps, 42 goals
Gary Hooper 239 apps, 107 goals
Oumar Niasse 102 apps, 43 goals
Islam Slimani 117 apps, 56 goals
Andre Carillo? 154 apps, 17 goals

Seems to compare pretty well to me.

What a waste of money. Not really aspirational for a club, going for Wer Spam’s first....no second...no third....no fourth... wait no fith choice striker.

Read my lips: NO NEW TAX....Oh wait. What I was saying refers to how much game time they actually had.

Khouma Babacar 22 goals and 8 assists in 3600 minutes

Benik Afobe 11 goals and 4 assists in 2900 minutes in the PL, 21 and 7 assists in 4200 mins the Championship

Florin Andone 16 goals and 5 assists in 3600 minutes in La Liga, 20 goals and 7 assists in 3200 in Segunda+ phenomenal workrate

Gary Hooper- He only has a season for Norwich in the PL, in which he scored 8 times, gave 2 assists in 2100 minutes. In the Championship he has 38 goals and 17 assists in 7500 minutes. And 100 in 9000 minutes for Celtic. I know that's not PL, but compare that to Diafra Sakho's record in Ligue 2, right before coming to West Ham

Diafra Sakho 26 goals and 5 assists in Ligue 2 in 6000 minutes. 18 goals and 4 assists in 3800 minutes in the Premier League for West Ham. And he's the same age as Gary Hooper, 5 years older than Afobe!

Oumar Niasse 9 goals and 3 assists in 1500 minutes. 16 goals and 13 assists in Russia and Europa League in 2700 minutes

Islam Slimani 9 goals and 6 assists in the PL and the CL for Leicester in 1800 minutes. 46 goals and 14 assists for Sporting in 6500 minutes.

Guido (not Andre) Carillo 16 goals and 7 assists in Ligue 1 and CL in 3000 minutes

I'd never have gone for a player like Diafra Sakho!

Looking at their respective PL stats, theres nothing to choose between them except for Slimani, who's figures are better - but he cost £29M.

Comparing La Liga , Championship, Portuguese league etc can be misleading so I'd rather stick to their PL history. Sakho measures up well.

Is the correct answer anyway.

I took issue with Matteo's sweeping statement above, which even his by minute breakdown doesn't really alter much. I'd say the only one who stacks up against him is Slimani, who would undoubtedly cost a lot more and has not had the expected impact at Leicester.

How can that be what you conclude after all that?????

Sakho's contribution in the PL is somewhat similar to that of Afobe's and Hooper's, 1 goal or 1 assist every 200 minutes or so. Kind of like Benteke's too. But Afobe is 5 years younger and Hooper is a totally different quality player (based on both their backgrounds in lower leagues). All the other players have better statistics, did you read the list upside down??

TAKING PLAYERS FROM LA LIGA, PORTUGAL ETC IS EXACTLY WHAT THE ABOVE PROVES IS GOOD! Niasse has 9 goals and 3 assists in 1500 minutes after being a beast in the Russian League (that's about just as much as Sakho has in 3800 minutes!!). Slimani also has these numbers after coming from great numbers in Portugal.

Everyone has done well in the PL after being great in Germany, Spain or France: Roberto Firmino at Hoffenheim, Diego Costa at Atletico, Drogba at Marseille, Dzeko from Wolfsburg, even the likes of Fernando Llorente or Graziano Pelle were great for lower league clubs. Michu came from Spain's lower divisions and he rocked it in the PL!

The ones who didn't cut it (like Iago Aspas) didn't cut it at clubs like Liverpool! At that level! And you know why they didn't cut it? Because they weren't given playing time, because they were competing with Luis Suarez. A Iago Aspas for a low league club like Crystal Palace would be amazing!!

Yep. You can throw as many stats into an argument as you like but they are simply irrelevant unless in an identical context. The only way those goals per minute numbers can be used as an accurate benchmark is if all were playing for the same teams against the same opposition in the same conditions etc

Look at the Cenk Tosun furore - is he actually that good? His record in the league this year so far is worse than either Gomis or Adebayor but there’s nobody looking to throw £25m+ at either of them.

There’s enough West Ham fans who don’t understand why he doesn’t play for them - much like Tomkins before we got him.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!
