If you look he was too far away to tackle without lunging in and likely giving away a free kick in a dangerous area and possibly getting another yellow card.

He knows Matic very well and that he has a virtually non existent scoring record so standing off and letting him blaze away from distance was a sensible call. Turning his back made no difference.

Perhaps if Sorloth would have clipped the ball into the space in front of Benteke (last couple of minutes, put it in the corner etc) as opposed to behind him he wouldn't of had to adjust his run and towards the side line. How long do you want to go back in the game to identify the culprit for the goal?

Every goal conceded can be broken down in tiny errors or incorrect positioning thanks to the various camera angles that are available now but ultimately we lost to a wonderful strike of which Matic would probably repeat once every 2 seasons. There really wasnt a lot that Palace could of done to prevent the goal.

Easy to say having not put in the shift ourselves. Ordinarily, yeah he probably gets there. In the last 10 minutes, everyone in red and blue was clearly knackered, so it's no surprise that he couldn't get on the end of a poor pass, he'd covered a hell of a lot of ground in that game.

I disagree with the last sentence as well, you just can't pin it on one moment because it suits a narrative.

Are United even in the game if we don't concede a silly first goal? We can trace it back to that can't we? But no, because it's Benteke that's the definitive moment.

Or what about Jimmy Mac completely fluffing a brilliant chance to bury the game from Riedewald's cross? Or, how about Sorloth failing to just roll the ball back to McArthur after the De Gea save?
