My wife works for a company who have cut back on stationery, they have been told they will have to buy there own stationery? I know if you have a uniform supplied and you wash it yourself but can you claim a tax change so you pay a little less tax can you get the same thing when buying your own stationery?

From Gov.com

You might be able to claim tax relief if:

you use your own money for things that you must buy for your job
you only use these things for your work
You can’t claim tax relief if your employer either gives you:

all the money back
an alternative, for example your employer gives you a laptop but you want a different type or model
You must have paid tax in the year. You’ll get tax relief based on what you’ve spent and the rate at which you pay tax.

Paper cuts. Aren’t they the worst?

Sorry to joke. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs, but hopefully the first sensible reply helps your wife. However I’m assuming HMRC won’t reimburse her for the full amount she’s had to spend, otherwise companies would start telling employees to buy their own desks, chairs, office buildings...

I'm fairly sure they cannot do that. If the company says she requires the stationary to do her job, they have to provide it or reimburse her for it.

A few restaurants got done for similar things to this in regard to uniform, which was wear your own black skirt/trousers or shoes etc.

Wagamama blamed "an inadvertent misunderstanding" of the rules on staff uniforms for the blunder.

The company said it had asked front-of-house staff to wear black jeans or a black skirt with their Wagamama-branded top.

This was considered as asking them to buy a form of uniform, "and so we should have paid them for it," it said.

A TGI Fridays statement said the firm had reimbursed team members for a shoe allowance.

The firm added: "This is a historic payment which was paid last year, and we have since reimbursed team members for the purchase of their black uniform shoes."

Optimistic as ever

I'm afraid that I'd think a company so strapped for cash that it was trying this sort of s*** was desparate and about to go down the toilet. Unless of course it's Amazon.

Don't stand for it. Failure to give you the tools you need to do your job is constructive dismissal (unless it's specified in the contract and even then it's dodgy - the only sensible example I can think of is professional musicians who play their own instruments because of their personal relationship with them).

This is correct.

tax or no tax, i'd be looking for another job. however good she feels it is or however nice the people there are, if the staff have to buy their own stuff, that company is pointing one way only and it ain't up
