It’s not just the records that were destroyed, the Home Office seems to be making a complete mess of this and it used to be one of our better run departments. At the same time you can’t expect ministers to go every time civil servants make a cock up – they should go when they are the cause.

Ministers are only too happy to take the credit when civil servants actually perform in line with or in excess of expectations, therefore they must take the flack when things go wrong.

Appalling especially when you consider how few criminals and established illegals have been deported. But how many people were even sent the letter? The boarding card debacle is shocking but contrary to one commentator's suggestion that the burden of proof is on the Home Office, surely the obligation is to retain your own documents. I wouldn't fancy my chances without papers ANYWHERE in the world. But obviously we're such racists and will do anything to sent 7 people back to the Windies while inviting 8,000 Syrians.

1. Administrative cock-up in the 70s leaving the Windrush dependents without documentation proving their right to remain (I'd have gone further and granted them all citizenship, but that's just me) 2. May's adoption of an aggressive environment for illegal immigrants - that, in my opinion, is a completely correct policy. illegals should be feeling unwelcome and under threat of deportation, and there should be at least some level of responsibility on employers to ensure the people they are hiring are legal residents. The point is that (as in 1) these people should not be showing as illegals If 1 hadn't happened, 2 is not an issue. It seems there are attempts from all over the place to make this party political, whereas it's been an issue, unaddressed by any side, for over 40 years, it's just more robust policing of illegals has brought it to the fore and it should hopefully now be addressed (finally)

So much for 'oversights' and 'clerical errors'........
