It's got ring to it hasn't it? What a huge surprise, they beat Morocco by double the votes.

I think some waverers were impressed by the United Bid's final presentation and turned off by Morocco's. Their whole rationale seemed to be Africa has only hosted one World cup, albeit 8 years ago. They also took swipes at the sport's "low profile" in the US & Canada, forgetting that Mexico is also part of the bid. One presenter went so far as saying that Maradona was unknown here in 1994. Since then the Premier League, Bundesliga, Champions League and Europa League are regularly aired live over here and MLS has been running since 1996. I feel Morocco shot themselves in the foot with their approach while the United Bid, which featured a speech by a Canadian player who was born at a Liberian refugee camp in Ghana and is now on the Canadian Men's team, as well as Brianna Scurry of the 1999 Women's World Cup Champion USA and a well known Mexican player whose name I missed, was compact, concise and appealing.

I know money is big business with FIFA but will England EVER host the WC again? It seems to me we are at the end of a list somewhere behind Brunei!

Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

While all that might be true, I think most were impressed by the revenue forecasts for it.

Africa has only hosted it once and Morocco has bid for it 5 times, while the other bidders have already hosted it 3 times. I didn't see any of the final presentations but I suspect votes were already decided long before today.

I just hope they have as few matches on the west coast as possible.

Going by a list of committed and leaning votes in the New York Times, of the 20 committed to Morocco 3 (Russia, Lebanon and Myanmar) switched to the United Bid. Of 8 leaning towards Morocco, 6 (Antigua & Barbuda, Botswana, Dominica, South Africa, St. Kitts & Nevis and St Lucia) switched to the United Bid. Certainly the money played a big role but I also feel the attitude of the Morocco bid, which tended towards arrogance, played a bit of role with waverers. Winning by 2 to 1 was not expected. Morocco made no mention of what might have been a crucial issue amongst the undecideds which is the inconsistent messages coming out of Washington. Perhaps if it had been solely a United States bid the result might have been very different.

Addressing England's chances in the future, I don't think the FA enjoys the confidence of the FIFA Congress. It might be a better idea if the four Home Nations FA joined together to bid. Scotland and Wales certainly can contribute venues and Northern Ireland could use reconstruction of its grounds. It may also be a UK/Eire bid encompassing the five FAs. However, The English FA has made far too many errors for the other members of FIFA to trust it.

sounds to me like the US/Mex/Canada bid was a shoe in from the start looking at the credibility of the competition, just like not many put in a rival bid to Qatar. Seems like everyone knows who's been greased up from the start

To be fair, 2026 will only be the second time the USA has hosted the World Cup and the third time that Mexico has hosted it since England aka ‘the home of football’ did so. For once old age comes with a benefit - the fact that I was old enough to enjoy the 1966 tourney.

The United States of Terrorism imprisoned most of FIFA when they didn't get 2022, is it really a surprise they get 2026.

It was by me, I never gave Morocco a hope.

I'm not a fan of joint bids in the first place. No wonder they expanded it to 48 teams, if they hadn't they'd be giving away over 10% of the places available to the hosts. One of whom has only ever qualified once and lost all of their games.

The number of so called errors that the FA have made pales into insignificance in comparison to other FIFA members and FIFA itself. We should get it in the next European cycle without any competition, IMO.

I was a young teenager and remember too but it has to be said the most watched league in the world, the multinational EPL, is in England where all the infrastructure as well as the mass of football fans are - across Europe - where Euro 96 was a massive success on and off the pitch as can be said for the 2012 Olympics too.

Far rather Morocco was hosting it in 2022 but it would have been refreshing and a real sign of a changing FIFA had it won for 2026. But it is same old same old!

They'll probably look at Scandinavia or Australia next
