Putting the Aussies to the sword in the 3rd ODI!

181-1 off 22 overs and the only wicket so far was a run out.

It is carnage over 400 and 6 overs more so records to be broken here.

And against Australia how sweet is that.

The two highest scores both scored at Trent Bridge, a proper test ground, rather than some diddy little ground somewhere in the world.

Back in the early 1970s, I went to Canterbury to watch Kent v Notts in the 40-over John Player League.

Kent batted first and amassed about 160 runs.

Notts, with a couple of young openers, didn’t go for it ie they ‘shut up shop’, treating their 40 overs as batting practice. I guess they saw a target of 4 an over being a bit ‘racy’ for their inexperienced side.

In the end I think they totalled about 120 for about 6 wickets. They lost (obviously) but I assume they felt some pride in not ‘throwing the bat’ and therefore not being bowled out.

From yesterday’s England game, it seems that one day cricket has come on a bit since then!!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

I don't want to appear churlish but whilst it was exhilarating to watch a batting masterclass I wonder what would have happened if Starc, Hazlewood and Cummings had been fit and playing.

While playing on home pitches is definitely an advantage essentially the last series down under showed us.

There are a lot of things wrong with the ECB but I like the look of some of the talent coming through.

Hain, Pope, Foakes, Lawrence, Livingstone, Clarke....and I still hold out hope for Hameed...struggling with a 22 average at the moment.

Stone (real pace) Coad (Hoggard 2.0), Helm (Fraser), Virdi (Monty), Porter, the Currans.

Off to Manchester for the Sunday game with a couple of mates.
Let's hope England bat first a put on a shed load.

Just been told by one of my mates that there is a good possibility of an upgrade to all-inclusive, well that should save a hundred odd quid for the 3 of us!

A few years ago one of my business contacts had a box at Old Trafford and I was always invited but unfortunately they always seemed to be in August coinciding with when I was away on holiday.

He was well connected with the cricketing community and well known people were always popping in including Mike Gatting who popped in, downed half a dozen pints then excused himself as he was due on commentary
