I don't want to appear churlish but whilst it was exhilarating to watch a batting masterclass I wonder what would have happened if Starc, Hazlewood and Cummings had been fit and playing.

Their bowling averages would've taken some damage.

What does this mean?

One of his business contacts has got a box/table in the corporate area, and we have been invited to join him, meaning no paying for drinks and food.

And you only estimate saving £100 between the 3 of you!

You're not planning on trying hard enough.

To be honest I will drink less if I'm in an area like that, as I am aware that I can be a bit loud when battered, and wasn't really planning to eat much, as we usually go for a curry after cricket. But exceptions may be made depending on the behaviour of the other inhabitants.

Back in the early 1970s, I went to Canterbury to watch Kent v Notts in the 40-over John Player League.

Kent batted first and amassed about 160 runs.

Notts, with a couple of young openers, didn’t go for it ie they ‘shut up shop’, treating their 40 overs as batting practice. I guess they saw a target of 4 an over being a bit ‘racy’ for their inexperienced side.

In the end I think they totalled about 120 for about 6 wickets. They lost (obviously) but I assume they felt some pride in not ‘throwing the bat’ and therefore not being bowled out.

From yesterday’s England game, it seems that one day cricket has come on a bit since then!!

It seems Australia have adopted these tactics today. "Just see out the overs lads..."

On the channel 5 highlights the Aussie commentator had a sense of humour. England has just set a world record and then lost 2 quick wickets

Aussie "we're running through them now"

God how boring......

Ah that's better, a play and miss, a loose shot, a collapse?

That's much more like it.

Victory off the last ball by Plunkett.

Or not. Trying to sweep a straight one from the spinner tut tut. We'd possibly be in trouble if Paine hadn't dropped Hales.

It's been a day for low centuries, 2 x 101 and one bang on the 100.

Cripes.

Enter Buttler, 10 minutes later he has smashed 54 and that's that.

I recall Glen McGrath once saying that England provided such poor opposition that they should think about only giving us three tests and reserve the five test series for better teams.

That's better a top order collapse with plenty of needless wafts and air shots just to remind us......

Credit to the Aussies for sticking out the bashing they have had - think they should get this one.
