From my perspective the culture of society always has to be encouraged to be meritocratic rather than equal. For example, you want the best surgeon for your hospital operation.

How this is implemented however can have elements of fairness....as long as that doesn't result in ultimately not having the best people performing the important functions in life.

For example, I agree with you that a system where opportunity is open for 'everyone' to succeed ability wise independent of class is important.

That's why I don't believe in grammar schools and I would probably end private schools. Then again, I wouldn't be soft on poor behaviour and politically correct on performance. Rigor shouldn't be the buzz word it is and discipline and the caine would be back in my system. Activists would be shown the door.

I would still have our universities but I would end any form of affirmative action and ensure that only the brightest went to them.

This doesn't end the specter of inequality of course as better families educate their own people and rich ones pay for it.....but it does make the system fairer. I would come down hard on cronyism. I want the brightest, not the best connected.

A difference from you however is probably that you would have this open to everyone whereas I would only have the British educational systems open to the British, with the exception of paid for foreign students.

Yep. Pretty much up until the last paragraph I agreed with every word. But I feel the last bit is very nuanced, and probably more weirdly I think I advocate free markets more than you do.

Well, I support free markets of course.

I just don't advocate for anything that acts against nationhood.

People have wealth through either privelidge, circumstance, or aptitude but one common denominator is interdependence, i.e. they need economies, markets and manpower to generate and scale their wealth. Entrepreneurship is successful if there is enough consumer demand and wealth, coming from people who have bought from taxable income. a premiership footballer's income is also based on the amount of consumer demand from either TV. sponsor or fanbase. Again from taxable income. In all cases it's a case of intelligent or priveldged people manipulating the system or people. That's why they should always pay a higher pro rata tax not related to their own personal tax take

You can always find a different supplier or tradesman or don't pay to watch or don't subscribe.
That's what a democracy is

There are only a few services where they have you by the gonads and they are multi nationals and even the rich have to use them.

why do you vehemently defend the wealthy? Do you subscribe to the trickle down theory? do you think the wealth gap is too narrow?

Stirling I don't defend the wealthy.
There is nothing to defend them about.
They need people to see that fairness has to be the normal.
The wealthy are actually a group of people which is getting bigger
Not through actually getting richer but by the gap between rich and poor closing. So it is very narrow at present and will get even more so.
If you have a house worth a million you are now deemed as rich and in that bracket.
But you only got that because you bought it ages ago.
That's not down to an individual being an entrepreneur and stuffing people on the way up. It doesnt mean you are rich as you need to live somewhere.
It does seem like no one actually gives a monkey's about what the rich pay. Unless they can "surely" pay more.
Be careful not to kill the goose which lays the golden egg.

No worries Cryrst, I do defend the wealthy.

They are a sign of a meritocratic society that works and as long as they are responsible and support the society that enabled that wealth I celebrate them.

I totally agree with you that you don't kill the goose which lays the golden egg....instead you feather the nest.
