After the terrible Paris attacks it was widely agreed afterwards that freedom of speech should prevale in the West.
Fast forward to 2018 borris Johnson makes a joke about burkers and letterboxes. Was that anymore offensive than Charlie hebdow depicting the prophet muhammad or borris him self being called a buffoon [Link]

Is freedom of speech only one way or have we finaly reached a cross roads and it's dead?

Don’t ask me. I still feel guilty about singing he’s got a pineapple on his head to Jason lee. Poor bloke totally lost confidence and never was much good after.

Makes you think.

By the way, Hebdo and Boris.

Charlie Hebdow was especially offensive to Muslims as their faith takes the comandment about craven images very seriously. Boris' silly jibe is a storm in a tea cup which will be chip wrap before you know it.

Of course the point of this thread is the chilling effect of the hypersensitivity of race, gender, religion etc on free speech. There must hopefully be few people who don't look back on what was "funny" 40 years ago with cringing embarrassment. Today the pendulum has swung too far to cater for anyone who perceives offence no matter how tenuous.

The pile-one is purely because he is front-runnner to take over from May. Of course the knives are out.

I would hate to think what the reaction would have been had his article came out in favour of banning the Burka. Tactical nuke?

You say that like It's a bad thing? My guess is that the poor woman who is forced to wear it by her husband is probably in serious danger of life or limb If she was free not to wear it.
Maybe the government would be wise to have a toll free number these poor wretches can call so they can get advice.
It's banned in Holland, Denmark & France It should be banned here as well. I have no issue with the head scarf for the sake of modesty, but the full black veil is a throwback to the middle ages..

I thought that Boris's remark was very funny as well as being very true but the people complaining that comments like that could stir up racial hatred are just dickheads.

Are we now saying that we hate anything that we find funny?

On a really hot day in Birmingham I saw a Muslim family out shopping. The wife was wearing her black pillar box whilst the husband was dressed more appropriately for the weather in tee shirt and shorts

The western media and elites reaction to Charlie Hebdo is a perfect illustration of the difference between words and actions.

Just like after the Bishopsgate bombing (which I was working near) the terrorist's agenda won.

We have these minority interest groups which have set up power bases from within the main parties with the express interest of pushing the activist versions of their religions into secular Britain. They want to stop any negative criticism of anything related to their group.

So we have have Muslims in the Tory party having the cheek to call for Johnson to be thrown out of the Tory party.

It's just like the Jewish activists being hyperbolic with Labour. Politicians in this country need to give these arseholes two fingers and stick up for secular western values.

The people supporting these activists don't represent the majority of people in the country.

I find it interesting when people say Britain is a tolerant fair society welcoming people's beliefs and cultures.
Does that work both ways? BRITAINS CULTURE is to see the person's you engage with?
And as Britain is the host country does this not mean the foreign culture should respect and tolerate the place they have adopted as their new country?

When western woman visit Islamic countries they dress accordingly, respecting their beliefs so I'm seing a very one sided approach to this.
This link even considers western woman "easy"

The Bottom Line

In short, if you observe local customs and traditions when traveling to Muslim countries, you'll wind up feeling more comfortable physically and socially.

Whether you find his joke funny or not how can a joke made at the expense of how some Muslim women dress stir up racial hatred?
