It does matter whether it is the truth or not. By banning somebody for speaking what they claim as a truth you merely give them a credibility that they do not deserve.

Because otherwise, why ban them in the first place? Why not humiliate them instead? Show them up as liars?

And the reality is, at least in the case of TR, in terms of the grooming gangs, our establishment did, at the very best interpretation, chose to ignore the warnings from the likes of the EDL and the BNP and even now, seek to stop people talking about what happened for a variety of reasons.

Bloody hell, you have a Labour Party who demotes one of its MP's for her refusal to stop talking about the cover ups and promotes one who 'liked' a tweet that essentially said the victims should keep their mouths shut in the interest of diversity.

Many on the left talk about wanting to decriminalise drug use because they claim that it is the illegality of them that acts in part to attract people to use them and yet seem blind to the fact that by banning people from expressing opinions actually gives them a credibility that their claims do not deserve.

I think it i always better to confront and challenge someone with a reasoned argument rather than banning them. I have never heard of Infowars but unless they are calling for acts of violence they should not be silenced. Nick Griffin was shown to be a complete idiot when he appeared on Question Time and he rapidly disappeared after that. He was probably hoping that the BBC would ban him from appearing so he could play the victim.

A reasonable example. Although it must also be remembered that he was taken to court because of comments he made in a private meeting that was filmed by an undercover documentary film crew and was subsequently found innocent.

Infowars had no real credibility with many people on the right for a variety of reasons. I think its host even admitted in a court case that he saw himself primarily as an entertainer rather than a serious political commentator. But now its been effectively banned, and in the run up to the November elections in the US, you actually have to give it a credibility.

Because if it was just hysteria and bulls***, then why take such a step? Complete over-kill. And why I struggle to get why the left are cheering it on beyond not being very bright themselves.

Perhaps the majority really are the naive virtue signalling morons that I am increasingly beginning to think they are? Idiots unable to actually counter any opinions they disagree with?

There's a feeling that the timing of this co-ordinated attack by the big three tech giants is due to the mid-term elections coming up as the Democrats have a good chance of taking the House.

Sorry Stirling, it wont let me quote the thing im replying too!

In regards to the crap with the cake, I actually think the company have the right to refuse customers on whatever grounds they want, we as a public have the right to tell them they are scumbags for doing it and destroy their reputation though. I kinda strafe left and right when it comes to freedom of speech. If Alex Jones is unhappy, he is welcome to go to speakers corner and have the right to exorcise any free speech he feels like, but nobody owes him airtime anywhere...

But it really, really isn't. That's the whole point. It's half truths (at best) dressed up to suit an agenda.

The left are equally as bad at this as well, for the sake of balance.

And yet they do so with the blessing of the platforms that purport to provide a voice to all.

Downside for them - by banning (or de-blue-tickmarking) certain people, they implicitly condone those they have not banned. Thus we see the stunning level of double-standards and hypocrisy when people like Jeong rear their heads.

These platforms really need to define what to them is "acceptable", and absolutely, that should include political inclination. Just let us know our voices are not welcome in their echo chambers. Then everyone is clear that they are little more than left-wing propaganda engines.

I would like to see that in law in some way. Such that removal from a platform has severe legal implications where content was not found to violate conditions. Conditions that are not so all-encompassing that the platform has discretion and latitude to ban anyone they like.

The mastery of that legal system will be to encode those conditions in a non-ambiguous way that provides end-users with genuine legal remediation for what is currently political censorship.

Now LinkedIn has blocked Alex Jones' account. Big tech have become political activists.

Well, I respect your viewpoint as consistent then even if our views are kind of in opposite directions.

Well, I say that, but in reality I found the cake thing a really hard issue, which I've advocated both ways on.....I see problems with both issues....I'm not really comfortable with either answer but....I suppose it's easy to go with the view which annoys my political opponents the most.....but that's not very grown up. If I gave it some very serious thought I could probably find some mish mash compromise solution but that's what we pay judges to do....even if some of them suck at it.

As for big tech....I view them as a monopoly....which, in my view, is interfering in the mid terms elections.....which is an abuse of their power.

Owned by Microsoft. I'm sure he was "spreading hate" on there too.

I have to say, I think these platforms are a bit cringe. I won't be sad when they hit saturation and can't offer much more than currently. I don't really know anyone that enthusiastically uses FB these days, other than to indulge in cheap virtue signaling.

I think we're growing past it.

That said, I'd love it if Trump moved to Gab and took his huge following with him.

Anyone, incidentally, know why you can't get on Gab via Google play / Apple store? You'll never guess...

If Trump wins in 2020, I'd be surprised if he didn't move off Twitter....well at the very least after 2022.

He has to take action on them anyway.....as we can see these companies doing this crap to him once the campaign starts.

Yeah, it's because Gab is a rival of Twitter and promotes free speech... er, actually, I mean, we all know Gab 'spreads hate', that's why! The catch all term used to block speech you don't like.

But you are right. Trump moving to Gab would be 'yuge'!

What, over and above highlighting the need for one? Why would you ask that? These are events happening in the US.

As for here, I have written to my MP recently over my concerns about MPs pushing for Internet censorship. I've also recently joined the only party who seems interested in free speech anymore, Ukip.

Thanks for clarifying.

Alex Jones is a bit of a knob but he's not alone in being banned recently for being a 'naughty boy' regarding his disdain of the current system.............that robs us all.
