I liked the nostalgia above but I have been going for forty years and 'Eagles' and 'son of Aylott' were not as inventive as our more recent songs. I would like the HF back as they improve the atmosphere.
In the old days we had a good atmosphere when doing well and a dire atmosphere when doing badly. At least the HF hardly watch the match so they just sing anyway. I tend to get pissed off and quieter when we do poorly (which is of course par for the course).

Can we have one game where we bring back the old habit of throwing toilet rolls onto the pitch?

At school, in our woodwork project, we all had to make a rattle, because they were popular at football games those days.

A rattle - if there's any readers here who weren't around in the days of Black and White television - was a weird device that sort of rotated around a stick and made a clacking noise.

It was thought to help generate a sense of excitement.

There also used to be a man with a sort of hollowed out oil drum, full of hot coals, on top which he'd roast chestnuts. They were lovely too.

(I'm not making this up)

There were two chanting traditions that seem to have died out too.

The slow hand clap (which was a fantastic way of demoralising the players even more, when things weren't going well).

The other popular chant, which seemed to be used at every game when I was a kid, went like this:

"bert Head out! Bert Head out!"

You try telling that to the Holmesdale Fanatics, and they'd just laugh at you.

I tried to get the old Bert Head out chant going at a game once, and everyone just stared at me, like I was a lunatic.

Apparently rattles were banned in the 1970s as being a bit too hard and weapon shaped. Originally known for their use to warn of imminent gas attacks in the trenches during WW1.

By the way, anyone else getting their page blocked by a Vitabiotics advert? I won't be buying that cr*p any more...

Yeah, we did this in woodworking too. Mine was crap LOL! A few seasons later I seem to remember that they were banned because they could be used as a wepon.

Bert Head needed to be the manager when you started the chant, ie " Bert head out" just doesn't work if for example Alan Purdue or Coppel were the manager

I still have my rattle from bygone days and I am not referring to my bones ! Certainly brings back memories !

Rattles, claret and blue walking sticks, rosettes and the 'Football League review' inserted in the matchday programme. And those darned scarves tied to wrists.
Not forgetting the "Knees up Mother Brown" as supporters dangerously plummeted down the Holmesdale terrace.

I am sounding like an old git.

I could do with a claret and blue walking stick

PompyEagle - I remember some of that...not so much Bert Head Out, but Percy Dalton's, rattles...jeez, make me cringe, like those clacker things from Leicester...you can't beat a roof over the Holmesdale and determined singing! It doesn't need to end now. Everybody! Keep Singing!

Loud and Proud and all that! Speak nicely to someone and they'll let you bring a flag in. 150 HF...you are amazing guys, thankyou, but it needn't end. Just Do It!!

And many of those weird old men were Palace supporters for ten, twenty, thirty,
forty, fifty or more years through thick and thin from the fourth division days. They are not glory hunters just because we are in the Premier league. Your remarks are totally offensive to a huge number of Palace fans so you can stick them where the sun don't shine.
