Atmosphere, they keep the singing going

Even more confused now. The club has ruined the atmosphere? How so?

Can we have one game where we bring back the old habit of throwing toilet rolls onto the pitch?

At school, in our woodwork project, we all had to make a rattle, because they were popular at football games those days.

A rattle - if there's any readers here who weren't around in the days of Black and White television - was a weird device that sort of rotated around a stick and made a clacking noise.

It was thought to help generate a sense of excitement.

There also used to be a man with a sort of hollowed out oil drum, full of hot coals, on top which he'd roast chestnuts. They were lovely too.

(I'm not making this up)

There were two chanting traditions that seem to have died out too.

The slow hand clap (which was a fantastic way of demoralising the players even more, when things weren't going well).

The other popular chant, which seemed to be used at every game when I was a kid, went like this:

"bert Head out! Bert Head out!"

You try telling that to the Holmesdale Fanatics, and they'd just laugh at you.

I tried to get the old Bert Head out chant going at a game once, and everyone just stared at me, like I was a lunatic.
