I would also make freedom of speech a cornerstone of the constitution as the Americans have done. It would give us problems but rather that than the constant eroding that is going on now.

The voters, who I have no time for, cannot have it all ways. They were offered, through a referendum, a chance to amend the system so they would be more accurately represented in Parliament. But they voted to retain the first past the post system. Tough titty voters, you get what you 'voted' for.

Good luck with writing a constitution that is relevant in every detail, in perpetuity. Or just don’t bother. What do you see as the benefits? I think the risks are pretty clear from the regular slaughter of innocents across the pond.

It will always be down to interpretation though, even if written. Does America have a better track record on free speech than Britain? I’d argue not.

But a referendum is first past the post as well and you have just argued that people have to accept those results. Live your own arguments.
