well done to Wickham for scoring against DH but still a long way from being fully fit
Ayew first team regular ? I am beginning to think DH is his standard
why not try Kaikai he could do no worse than Ayew

I know he's still a way off PL fitness levels, but Wickham actually looks like a PL striker. Some of the goals he scored before his injury were stunners. He will never run around like Ayew, but if he can stay fit then I think he may be our answer. It's a big if though.

I recall a good header against Watford and an albeit screamer against WBA but that’s the only “stunner” I can remember him scoring.

I don’t get the Wickham hype at all. Let’s take the fact he hasn’t played football at any decent level for 2 years out of the equation. There was actually a time when he was fit and played for us. And for the most part, he was completely ineffective and nothing special at all.

I know we’re desperate for a goal scorer. But let’s not rewrite history with regards to Wickham. He was distinctly average even before the injury woes.

Add that to the amount of time he’s been out and it’s pretty clear to me that he’s not a reliable answer to our problems whatsoever.

For now, it should simply be Wilf & Andros in the same style of play and formation as the end of last season & at the start of Roy’s reign (ie Chelsea at home). I’m gobsmacked we haven’t reverted back to it yet.

Wickham was looking like the player we hoped we'd signed before his injury. The Andros and Wilf thing worked well against Chelsea but then quickly got found out. Everyone just seems to remember that one game rather than the one after where we lost to Newcastle without scoring or the games where there was no one in the middle waiting to convert chances.

Unfortunately we have not got many choices but until Wickham and Benteke are fit we have one target man striker in Solorth. Ayew in my view plays best off a main striker. We also have a problem in left midfield with Wilf playing more centrally. I would like to see us try Solorth with Meyer playing off him (much as Cabaye did when with Newcastle) I would like to see Andros and Wilf using their ability on wings with instructions to swing balls into the big striker with themselves and Meyer looking for chances off him. This may seem a shame as We could put Ayew in the Meyer role but I feel Meyer is wasted further back in a defensive role

I never knew benteke still has issues from his last injury. This knee op shows me he may not have been this sht afteral, and confidence wasn’t the issue either. It was down to this.

But that’s just completely baseless.

We played it in our biggest ever premier league win against Leicester. And a few other times when we looked great. Including the away win at Stoke and Bournemouth away where we looked far more of a threat than we did last time out.

It is by far the best football we have ever played in the premier league in that system.

When did this “getting found out” period occur? Because I must have missed it.

The absolute fundamental need for a target man no longer exists in football. Liverpool, perhaps the most attackingly fluid team in the league don’t even play with a striker.

It worked well for us, a damn sight better than what we have currently.

I do think we have been unlucky with our strikers.
We have been without Wickham for two years and it looks like Benteke will have made minimal contribution for at least 18 months through lack of form or fitness.
Ayew has disappointed me so far.
He works hard but I thought we were getting a player with pace and a few tricks to get beyond the defence and get shots away.
So far he has shown a reluctance to get past players and has just run into blind alleys where he is easily dispossessed.
I hope I’m wrong about Sorloth but for me he just does not look up to it. There is no spark or aggression to his game and he doesn’t seem to know how to head the ball.
Oddly enough he looked more promising in his early games last season but he seems to have regressed ( I know it’s still early days).
All this makes we think to get points in the next couple of months we’ll have to concentrate on getting clean sheets because I can’t see us scoring too many goals.

Still think Benteke's monumental s***ness requires even further explanation - opening a cursed ancient tomb, maybe

We also played it v Brighton and WBA. It enabled PVA to get forward more. RLC was instrumental in this system though and hes not here anymore

2 words. Max Meyer.

What he lacks in power he more than makes up in technical ability.

It just seems like there is a system screaming out to me that incorporates Max. Allows us to start playing good football again. And solves the issue of strikers.

If the goal drought continues until the end of the year we will have to enter the market again and probably spend a fair amount on another striker. Just hoping we can find a gem. Would like to see RLC back too in midfield, who may well help. Clearly somebody within the club believes Wickham is worth a punt, after a considerable amount of time out with injury.
