I think there are some people here being really harsh on a guy who's barely had any time on the pitch- of his first PL Season. We live in an age of Instant Gratitude, where people want results right away.

There used to be a time where only the cream of the crop could join a new league and perform instantly. Now we expect that as a matter of course.

FWIW, I thought he had a good Game yesterday. kept the ball well, and linked up really well with Wilf. I was a little surprised at his substitution - I would have preferred McA to come off, as we look better with Meyer on the pitch.

It's not difficult to set our midfield up to Meyer's strengths but Roy is simply too stubborn to try something different. I fear he will be the next Steve Mandanda and walk out in the summer....

Kouyate - Luka
Townsend - Meyer - Zaha

This looks great in theory, but of course we have nobody capable of being an effective lone striker. Also, it's a very offensive formation unless we snap back into a 4-5-1 off the ball - and do we think we can rely on Wilf to stick to defending down the flank, or think that this would be an effective use of his talent?

That said, this would have been a formation worth trying even with a dud Ayew up front against ultra-defensive Newcastle at home.

When we very rarely sign a ball-playing midfielder it always ends up him being either played out of position or unable to fit in with the manager's style of play. Think Barry Bannan and Owen Garvan.

He must be given a chance.
He is the best we've had since Michael Hughes.

His problem is the lack of support from the defence where our captain seems the most culpable.

His ideal position would be to sit behind Zaha who is suffering from lack of support when he is being harried by up to 4 opposition players (like against Chelsea) At the moment only Meyer and Zaha seem capable of making a telling pass.
Zaha won't be of help until he gets support.

Basically we lack 'class'and should utilise what little we have.

For me, after zaha he would be next on the teamsheet, put him just in front of Luka and kouyate in a roaming role, the guy is absolutely class but is not a defensive midfielder hopefully someone on the coaching staff will make it evident to Roy before he gets the hump and wants away.

Too much criticism of Roy here. Meyer was started yesterday and was not especially impressive. His finishing was particularly poor. Given the limited tools at his disposal I think Roy is doing a decent job and if he’d enjoyed the rub of the green we’d now be in a more comfortable position. It’s a shame that we’ve lost the momentum of last season but constantly slagging off Roy’s judgement is getting a little tiresome.

You said it. Meyer’s first game, played on the left. Until Roy alters the rigid formation and tactics there will be frustrated fans. I was frustrated last season but he was delivering the points at an impressive rate. He may have benefited a lot with Cabaye and RLC compared to this season, but to just keep it the same without them, and then not bring the only creative player other than Wilf until only just now, Roy has to look at himself and what he’s doing, as we are.

Meyer is not a defensive midfielder and Luka didn’t defend on his own last season. So what do we play? 4-4-2, with Meyer on the bench, or a few minutes if he’s lucky or a busy game played out of position on the left vs a top 4 team.

Roy is just delaying the inevitable. Get some more creativity with one of a couple of players able to provide any or we’re in serious trouble and Roy may have to go, however it happens.

Roy is a great chap but we’re just hoping for the bounce of the ball this way so far, and we’re not exactly blessed with clinical finishers. Twice we had players having to pass to nobody in the box because they had 3 defenders about to make them surrender the ball. PVA and Zaha in the first half. Who was playing centrally? Nobody creative.

We need goals. Wilf cannot do it on his own but the Arsenal cameo appearance showed what Meyer and Wilf can do. They both occupy and scare defenders. The rest do not.

I hope I’m proved wrong but I don’t think it will work out for Meyer at Palace.
It’s not that he’s a bad player or that Roy is a bad manager.
I’ve observed Roy over a long period and I don’t think I can recall him using this type of player.
His prototype of a midfield player is Morrison at WBA, Murphy at Fulham and Mcarthur with us.
He tends to be very loyal to these consistent, steady players where you know what you’re getting and who suit his conservative approach.
This has served him well over his career so it’s difficult to be too critical.
As others here have pointed out Meyer probably needs to play in a central midfield role with two holding players behind him.
This would enable to him to link the midfield with the forwards.
However, I can’t recall Roy using this system.
He has tried to shoehorn Meyer into a narrow midfield role on the left but it was evident yesterday than, other the first ten minutes, he had no influence on the game and spent his time chasing shadows.
I can’t see Roy starting him ahead of Luka, Mcarthur or Kouyate.

Played out of position out wide and totally ineffective. He has to play in the centre behind Sorloth with Zaha and Townsend out wide and two defensive players. I would prefer McArthur and Luca, although the latter needs to stop giving the ball away. Meyer should also take the free Kicks and corners instead of Luca.

That’s a front 2 to strike fear into the best defences in the land.

I seriously hope you’re on the wind up.

Vive le Roy!

Thought he started very brightly yesterday and played some neat passes in and around the box. He faded and his finishing wasn't great but that's to be expected of someone who has barely played in the league so far.

Let's also not forget the opposition on the day who could well win the league this season. I want to see him again in a similarly advanced position against weaker opposition where he will have a split second more on the ball and slightly larger gaps to pass into. Still think he is potentially class.

I dont think people are turning against Meyer at all... I think some people, myself included just pointed out that Meyer looked out of his depth yesterday and faded quite badly after a very good first 15-20 minutes.

I'm not sure if the OP is Meyers mum or another family member but he takes it very personally if people criticise Meyer and totally over reacted and said I was 'picking' on Meyer yesterday when I raised this point.

Nobody... no matter how good they are is immune from criticism.. it's not picking on someone or turning against them it's just simply saying what you felt of there performance.
