Worth £936m

Yet it seems a huge influence on leaving the EU

Financial services £119 bn

Professional services another £60 bn

So how do the fisherman exercise so much influence to the detriment of the others?

It’s not just the money. It’s about entire communities and their continuing ability to ply a trade they’ve been engaged in for centuries. The fishing industry is of immense cultural and emotional importance.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Exactly. The economy gets hit for emotional reasons. Maybe better to have found a specific solution for the very small number of fishermen and their families

And let’s not forget this situation largely is due to our fishermen selling their quotas for short term gain. We knock finance for getting a bail out yet bail out the tiny group of fishermen at a massive cost to coming generations

You are sounding like a Remainer Mr Spock.

None of you Remainers seem capable of seeing past the economic and glimpsing the bigger picture.

The bigger picture?

Economics say stay in
Security says stay in
Environment says stay in
Trade says stay in
Opportunities for our young people says stay in

Which bigger picture aren't I getting? Oh, of course, it's your fascination with immigration. You are simply switching your immigrants from one continent to others, as time will surely tell.

It's a subject used by right wing commentators / Farage / Moscow to tap into people's nationalism and influence voting by painting the EU as the enemy and our waters are being invaded.

Maybe they thought the Gammon would think Britain rules the waves and get them throthing

This is kind of my point but I certainly would not have made it that way.

Fishing has become a cause celebre without a good rationale.

On the other hand, farming is worth £24bn in revenue. 75% of farms would fail without subsidies. The UK Government has announced it will cease all subsidies by 2028 now it is no longer bound to the EU policies. The EU has no such plans. So that's all going to go well isn't it...

Personally I like farming communities and regret we shall lose them. I don't especially like deep sea fishing communities, the ones affected by the EU, having lived in Hull for years.

They came up with a solution that suited the fishing industry, then realised thee was a catch

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Kind of like the Labour party & their support for the Coal mining Industry when it was the Labour Party who closed more mines than most...........
