The history of Anglo-Irish relations could be summarised by one nation's continual brutal suppression of a neighbour that merely wanted its own independence and never even remotely represented a threat to it.

from the time of the Spanish Armada up to the Falklands , Catholic Ireland was often seen as a back door for military powers to get at Britain.

Like the vietnamese, the peasant farmers in Ireland found themselves as pawns in a struggle of superpowers of whom they had little acquaintance.

Even now, with Brexit negotiations being troubled, little Leo Varadkar the irish PM is acting as Merkel's attack dog. Making everything much more difficult than needs be for Westminster. Varadkar is a disgrace and should resign.

And as for Derry/LondonDerry , i love the idea of being in one country having a pint...barman calls 'last orders' so you walk 100 yards to continue drinking in the other country.

If the English hadn't forged a great military and used it to create an empire we would have become part of someone else's.

It was an age of empire building and while it is behind us the ideological left and selfish economic right have used it to to slowly wipe out the English on its own island.

What we were once willing to fight wars over....our independence..... is now slowly being eroded and taken away.....and the media won't even admit it's a problem or that it is even happening.

Apparently it's racist to want anglo saxons to remain in charge of its own islands. Yet pretty much every country outside Europe takes its own sovereignty and internal hegemony for granted.

The post war ideological left and economic right have been a cancer in different ways to the survival of Albion.

Cromwell did unforgivable things in Ireland.

And the orange takeover of the north is a headache most of us wish hadn't happened.....along with partition.....and I'm a unionist of course.

However, Ireland staying neutral in WW2 pretty much wipes most sympathy away for me personally.

Even though I completely recognise the individual Irish who chose to fight for an independent and democratic Europe......even though they were shunned by their own disgrace of a government on their return.

I very much doubt whether there are many pure Anglo Saxons left in this country as most of us are mongrels in one way or another

And also, of course, the process of suppression of the Anglo-Saxons began in 1066.

Yes, to a certain extent that's true. But lets not downplay the amount of German/French/Danish/regional genes that make up the English But the point is more about anglo saxon culture.....WASP.

Though you don't have to be white in my book....that's too rudimentary for me. If you are committed to being English and are a genuine anglophile then you are welcome.

The rest can..... (with exceptions)

That said, unless the English remain the demographically dominant group within England......This country will no longer be England.

I for one am firmly against that happening.....which puts me against the politicians and activists who are leading the masses..... sleep walking their children into that poisoned chalice of a future.

Katie Hopkins bangs on about us not being a 'multicultural society' but actually being a series of disconnected ghettoes. Love her or hate her, on this point she has identified an imbalance at the core.

the lessons from Northern Ireland need to be learned if mainland England is not to fall to the same sectarian madness.

Integration and assimilation is desirable. Otherwise madness ensues.

In places like Luton, what proportion of white english boys have a muslim girlfriend ?

what is the gender profile of refugees/asylum seekers ? is it 50:50 male female ? or more like 95:5 ?

in places like Belfast, what proportion of married couples are mixed Catholic/Protestant ?

in London is the number of couples 'black man with white woman' matched by an equivalent proportion of couples 'black woman with white man' ? there was a black woman on the telly going nuts about this last week.

'white men with chinese women ? and white women with chinese men ?' are both types of couple balanced 50:50 ? on your high street ?

For the purposes of social cohesion, it is desirable that different backgrounds all mingle without bias. Otherwise there is a loss of confidence in the whole game.

it didnt happen in Ulster, and we all know how that played out.

It's easy to judge history, but let us remember the Catholic factor. Ireland was seen as a potential chink in the armour of Britain by Spain. The rebels in Ireland got assistance from Spain and Spanish soldiers were directly involved in the Battle of Kinsale where they got spanked. Politics is never as simple as it appears in hindsight.
It was inevitable that the more powerful nation would dominate the lesser in the days of conquering but in more enlightened times, historical resentments are not so easily forgotten and events need to be seen objectively and in context rather than with prejudice.

I agree entirely.

Still what Cromwell did was way beyond the pale.

'the Pale' was Dublin County. Cromwell's biggest genocide was Drogheda, which is 30 miles North of the Pale.

so , yes. Correct.

Having a statue of Cromwell at Westminster is about as offensive to irish people as the Statue of Bomber Harris is to any people from Dresden.

I think that despite his reputation, many neutral, objective historians would say that the ruthlessness of Cromwell's actions in Ireland has been overplayed, considering the circumstances.
Obviously, there will always be resentment among some of the Irish.
