Did someone put him in charge then? This answers some of your earlier queries as to why anyone should listen to the Fishing issue, on either side.

Not really I don't think Urk is that influential either. I assume that these guys bought the fishing quotas from UK fisherman by the way, although that isn't stated. It's not my fault if some greedy fisheries businessman sold the birth right of his workforce. The addiction to Herring is one of the strangest things known to mankind. A major reason why I struggled to find decent food when I was in Stockholm. Didn't want reindeer steak either.

I wasn't referring to the one town, more this part: It is a reminder that in the Netherlands, UK, France and Spain, fisheries hold more political clout than their overall contribution to the economy might suggest. Europe's cherished fishing communities are part of the national psyche and heritage, and are particularly vulnerable to any changes in the current climate. I agree with the Herring point though. Swedish Christmas dinner has a course with numerous varieties of cold Herring dishes. It's good bait as far as I'm concerned. I don't mind a bit of reindeer to be honest.

And due to its bad image and use as a political football, our biggest industry is constantly vilified. If it gets crippled we won't half regret it.

Neither will the marine environment mind a relief from their efforts, we would like the sea bed to be just that.. The fish themselves are not represented by politicians and may simply choose to swim to Norway for example, where they have less chance of being caught. The UK fishermans idea of fish conservation has been to ignore it. Looking at what is actually going to happen, it appears that the EU will fish in the UK waters and we can do nothing about it, serves us right. If you concede the right to be walked over, that is precisely what will happen. .

It deserves to stand up for itself, which was my point. Otherwise you're kind of implying that a rich person's vote (in anything) should count for more than a poor one's. Ignoring the fishing industry isn't going to stop the, what is in effect, attempted blackmail of threatening x, y or z industry. It's opportunism from those that didn't get the result they wanted or foresaw. If there were better options the money would've gone there long before now. Edited by Stuk (28 Nov 2018 7.22pm)

once sharks become extinct the whole fishing industry will be f***ed up anyway...much more of worry than what bloody brexit will cause. this thread should be based on overfishing rather than fisherman getting their knickers in a twist over quotas & boundaries.
