I could be wrong, but back in the late 70's/early 80's - didn't Grimsby turn up at out place without their kit and had to borrow our second strip? Again - could be wrong - wasn't it another Grimsby game where the goalkeeper kicked it out and the ball smashed into two pigeons? Again......could be wrong.....

5 quid per adult, kids for a quid would be nice. something to try to fill the place, give it some buzz and encourage a large travelling support. (suspect even these prices mightn't fill it, mind). I liked their fans' comments.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Back in the 70s we were pretty evenly matched. But in the 80s they had a nasty habit of beating us. I didn't look forward to them coming. I believe we had a good record against them back in the 70s. I recall going to a home game against them and I think winning 2-0 or 3-0 and I have a feeling Swindlehurst scored. All a distant memory !

Well, they were pretty complimentary. I had expected more negative posts.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

I liked their fans' comments. No encouragement needed for a large travelling support tbh,we have a large travelling support as it is and even for a basement club take well over a thousand to most london games, many see it as a great draw either because it's a new ground for the younger fans or a bit of nostalgia for the 40+ year olds from our championship days...would expect around 2500 to travel if given the allocation although don't be surprised with a larger following...like yourselves grimsby have a bit of a reputation in the lower divisions for being a bit mad and very noisy so should be a cracking day out,a few fans are a little deluded from these parts and think it's a very winnable game but it is only a minority,so it will be a good booze up regardless

A lot of people regard Shrewsbury as the bogey team of the 80's, but I think Grimsby must run them a close 2nd. Also some very painful days in Cleethorpes 82/83 1-4, 83-84 0-2 and 85/86 (when going for promotion)0-3. God knows how we put up with those days.

Grimsby had a torrid start to the season, losing 7 of their first 10 games including a 4-1 home defeat to Forest Green Rovers in their opening match.I did fear for the tenure of the erudite Michael Jolley, but they have had a revival in fortunes winning 3 and drawing 1 of their last 4 games covering league and FA Cup. Jolley signed 2 of the players he had in Burnley's development squad, Luke Hendrie (Son of John Hendrie) on loan from Shrewsbury and Alex Whitmore from Chesterfield. You would have to say a good draw for both sides, from different perspectives. Overall though a slightly disappointing draw. If Soilhull can beat Blackpool, then Solihull at home to Arsenal is the most iconic tie.

Grimsby in the late 90s early noughties was always a kids for a quid day along with the likes of Barnsley, weaned my eldest boy on that type of fixture into a Palace through and through supporter.
