Some have though haven’t they? Last season we were playing teams at the worst time, whereas Brighton were playing teams at the best time. Let’s be honest, Burnley, Leicester and Cardiff whonwe failed to score against were all pretty bad. Chelsea weren’t very good either where our last 10 minute effort wasn’t enough compared to vs Wolves and I wasn’t impressed with Wolves last night either. Sure against Man City we can heap praise on Roy’s tactics and use of the team but in all those others the opposition were poor, of that there’s no doubt. I’d take that all day long apart from that unless we start taking teams on more or looking for a win before 80 minutes we’ll be relying on the opposition being poor or poorer to people win the points, although I suppose that’s the thing. It worked v Wolves and not v Chelsea so that’s 3 points from those 2 and 1.5 points per game, which is how we were sometimes on the right side of these fine margins Roy plays. It worked wonders last season but this season it’s been frustrating, and you cannot deny that last night could easily have been 0-0 or 1-0 to them so he’s setting up to ride the fine margins and hopefully stay up. Music to Parish’ ears if he doesn’t quit if Parish doesn’t provide transfer funds, but very disappointing for fans who go to certain matches or see that the Chelsea match was there for a point plus a push for maybe 3 rather than very little endeavour and maybe a half chance.

It’s not pretty and it can work, but playing for that maybe chance carries risks and frustrates supporters no end to the point they start thinking is it worth being there if you can watch this kind of football and every game in your armchair.

Every team has bad days, such as when we played Chelsea we had an off day. However, it is possible our lacklustre display against Chelsea meant we had the energy to beat Wolves, whereas they spent all theirs beating Spurs.

What Roy does is make us competitive in most games we play. We have the fourth highest number of clean sheets in the league and were it not for misfiring strikers we would be comfortably higher. You can't blame him for the players failure to convert one of 31 chances against Cardiff, can you? When we play teams we're expected to beat we are on the front foot, when it's the other way round we look to counter. Would you do it differently? Chelsea aside we have created chances even against the top four and have achieved draws against Arsenal and Man Utd as well as running Spurs and Liverpool close.

Before we played them how many people thought we'd get 3 wins and a draw out of our last 5 games? Not many I imagine. If Roy's tactic is to somehow make other teams play badly I'll take that!

People often say that we did well because the other side were terrible and do not understand that they were terrible purely because we disrupted their play, Chelsea disrupted our play! people need to get over it! ..we disrupted Wolves, we gave them no encouragement with the ball whatsoever.

Spot on. It drives me potty how we seem to crystallise every bad performance into signs of relegation and every good performance into signs of bad luck for the opposition.

What keeps us up, year on year, are these runs of 10 points in 5 games. Every year we have these runs of 10 games where we pick up next to nothing, but if we can get two or three runs of 5 games Wewhere we pick up 10 points then by the end of the season we have enough. Whether those runs come in the first half of the season (as in the Pardew season) or the last half (as in every other season) doesn’t really matter.

If you look at the last five games, the point against Cardiff was the other side of the coin to the win against Man City, and the win against Wolves was the other side of the coin to the defeat to Chelsea. In the round, we have enough points for this stage in the season.

You just need to look at the top of the Premier to see how things are moving forward. Compare the top 2 (Manchester City and Liverpool) in our first season back with the top 2 now (Manchester City and Liverpool) and see how they have moved forward. We are moving forward just by standing still.

I wouldn't disagree with the post but how much of that is down to hodgsons management or the fact his inherited a pretty decent team who can turn it on against anyone every now and then. The frustrating thing for me is we look just one click away from being a pretty decent team and that's down to Roy to make happen but he would rather play it safe knowing the quality we have will just be enough to see us alright. We've got the best defence outside the top 6 and we quite clearly have problems converting chances so how are we looking to improve this ?

We don't seem to be, there's no evolution in our game at all. When benteke was fit, he was played deeper with wilf playing off him and has never looked great as a striker and has always been so much more ineffective and isolated up top on his own. We just play so narrow. Townsend and zaha are just as bad as each other, one wants to take on the whole team and the other just wants to cut in and shoot between 4 defenders and a goalie 9 times out of 10 his shot being blocked. Zaha just seems to take on everyone out of frustration that there's no one good enough to pass to. How many times does wan bissaka overlap only to get ignored because Townsend decides to cut in again. Van aanholt doesn't even bother and just runs to the edge of the box hoping zaha might pass, the rare occasion he does it's always a short pass back to wilf, tho neither are the best at crossing but we don't even attempt to try and change or do anything different.

We can't score and the attitude seems to be oh well we will have just enough quality to stay up anyway. Great 2nd half of the season to watch.

Blimey, you really really look for the negatives, are you saying that every single thing bad, or loss, mistake, it is all down to RH, but every win or good play is to the good players at his disposal. Poor Roy. he is really in a cant win situation, he is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn't.

Frustrating to read isn't it, Hodgson is doing a fantastically brilliant job with the players he has to work with, the team has become much much stronger due to players coming back and through improving with his coaching.
The team is creating tons of goalscoring opportunities in almost every game and all some people can do is criticize, I'd only be concerned if we were not creating chances personally.

Yes, I remember watching us a few years ago when we never looked like scoring and it felt like we never had a chance of winning the game. With the exception of a handful of matches this year I thought we could have won all of them and that is solely down to the fact that we do create chances. If we bury them all with a striker who is on fire then we start looking like a team that could finish as Burnley did last year or Leicester a couple of years ago (although I’m not saying we are PL winning material at present!)

Quite right, all we need is a little tweaking with the players we have.

Surely Big Sam is the most successful England manager?
