and comparing a purchase of a defender in close season when we had Dann and a couple of others as back up, buying an short term injured defender wasn't a big issue as needing a striker to bang in goals next weekend or we may end up relegated.

comparison just isn't there.

Ever regret having posted something?!

My use of the adjective ‘unproven’ was in respect of Sakho, not Solanke. I said that Sakho wasn’t unproven when we signed him, but he was injured. I agree that Solanke is unproven; so much so that I’m surprised we were even interested in the first place.

And I wasn’t comparing the Sakho signing with the aborted Solanke one per se; I was merely giving an example of a player being signed when unfit. You are of course correct; the two situations are chalk and cheese.

He scored 7 in 25 for Vitesse here on loan. Yet unproven in the PL indeed and 19m seems madness. Saw some more free scorers in the Dutch league fail in England and yet we felt the need to pay big for someone who could not cut it here.
Would like us to get Vincent Janssen on loan with an option to buy from Spurs but many will disagree no doubt and Levy may not like to take his loss.

Sky reporting that Solanke is out until February with a hamstring injury. Probably not fit to play til March given his lack of match fitness. No use to us.

Funnily enough, I was discussing Janssen with a friend. I think he might be a good short term option as he is harder working than Benteke, and is at least fit (or he was when I checked).

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

He runs the channels relentlessly, would finally provide some fast movement in attacking sense and I think he would be a crowdpleaser with his work ethic. Some people seem to think Ayew works hard, but I have not seen it. For obvious reasons I only see a limited number of games life but it mainly seems "token" running to me.
Now if Janssen would come back to goal scoring form obviously remains to be seen but worth a loan spot I would say.

That would be fine were it not for Parish preening himself about this being in the bag and done and ghe fact that the moment we suddenly decide he's a "crock" another club swoops in and signs him for a large sum in five minutes flat.

This to me just doesn't seem to add up. I don't have a go at Parish no matter what but it's worrying how often our transfers hit last-minute show-stoppers.

Oh well, whit's fur ye'll no' go past ye, as they say up here.

Judging from what Warnock has just said about the Clyne deal on 5Live even a phone call from the Scousers saying it was done and dusted is no insurance in regards to dealings with them. He heard that the deal had fallen through on the tv !! As somebody said murky all round from the players, agents and clubs.

And it's not as though we have zero experience when it comes to dealing with the bin dippers.

What I would like to know is whether Liverpool were aware Solanke would be out until February before they wasted our time? I can't imagine we would even begin negotiations if we knew, would we?

If Liverpool were playing silly buggers then I hope it motivates us to ruin their title challenge again. £19 million for an unproven youngster is just wrong for me. Given these big purchases of inexperienced youngsters maybe Howe has a pet dog with a bank account.

How much would you bet that Solanke will be banging in goals for Bournemouth before any new striker is on the field for us?

I agree we don't want a striker who will be out for a month, but I'm starting to think that we'll end up with some bargain basement project on 1/31, who we won't see for weeks later, and then they will be useless.

2017 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Middlesboro
2018 Jan. (Sako) Palace 1 - 0 Burnley
2019 May (Batshuayi, Batshuayi, OG, Van Aanholt, Townsend) Palace 5 - 3 Bournemouth
2020 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Newcastle

That’s the spirit.

Bournemouth have clearly bought him as a replacement for Wilson who is expected to move on. It’s a completely different situation to our own. It’s also a massive amount of money to gamble on mere potential. If it comes off then good luck to them, but a club of their size can’t afford to make many mistakes of that magnitude.
