At that time it was first Jimmy and wasn’t it Bolasie straight after? Not only that but any long term big players just had to go in his eyes, odd and insecure man that he is.

Also, a good run in the cup can build confidence and translate into (obviously that didn't happen for us) the league, chance to blood younger/fringe players.
This was once a quality forum.... |

Honestly, us being in the prem and moving out to canada at the same time was a stoke of luck in that i can watch 90% of the games, home or away. However, i speak for myself, but i reckon a lot can relate - 70% of the season has been either frustration, heart break, anxiety and horrible to watch. Pardew's first year was amazing - keeping us up and then top 6 at xmas, but after that, his time was a joke and our second season in the prem looked so promising, until Pulis walked. We haven't found our groove since. Our aim should always be 30 points going into the new year. Currently leicester, wolves, watford, west ham and perhaps brighton are on course for that. Is it too much to ask that we be on that level?? Then, it gives us the breathing room to have some fun in the cup. If we finished the season on 45 - 50 points each year and never really looked in danger of relegation and continually got to the last 8/4 of the cups, that would be awesome. 5-7 years later you then sit down and think - ok, what next.

Realistically the 2 cups are the only things we can win, so let's have a go. We are good enough on our day to win it and a major cup win could help change our club's mentality (slight inferiority complex?) Cup days are dedicated Saturdays now so the extra load is manageable and for the next round at least, gives us a chance to give our bench warmers a run to keep match fit. I'm all for it, as long as we can avoid dreaded replays. A Tuesday night in Grimsby in January, for instance.

I tend to agree the cup's are a bad distraction for a team that needs all its energy to stay in the division and we certainly do not want to risk injury to our few good players (look at the tackle by Fox on Townsend, at the weekend, we were lucky that did not break his leg). We have to concentrate on getting the 40 points or so that we need to stay in PL. Relegation would be a disaster for the club and its finances. As someone said earlier in the post we should be capable of getting 50 points without all this anxiety that we have to endue season on season!

This for me. All logic states for a smaller club like ours concentrate on the league. But the fans don't like an early exit. The coffers don't like it. And the players hate it and it rocks confidence. I have heard pundit after pundit saying a good cup run adds nothing to fatigue and provides a real buzz and drive to a squad who are all getting a game and sharing in the collective momentum. On balance a good cup run has to be a good thing.

Don't really disagree in that I have no fear of the Championship -it can be great fun. But right now I'd buy another couple of seasons in the PL just to get the stand done and funded. It may not be a cup but it would be a great legacy of our time at the top.

Yeah that would be the logic. Thin resources stretched even thinner. One bad injury of a key players in a "pointless " 4th round tie... However as others have said our circumstances were very different then. Different squad and coaching team horrible injuries incurred in training not the cup etc. Maybe lessons learned? The cup still has value oversea and winning it for a club our size literally puts us on the map and boosts non Tv revenue. Always a trade off but on balance...
