Don't really disagree in that I have no fear of the Championship -it can be great fun. But right now I'd buy another couple of seasons in the PL just to get the stand done and funded. It may not be a cup but it would be a great legacy of our time at the top.

Yeah when I am lying on my death bed in however many years time who wants to be reminicising about that fabulous day at Wembley when we won the Fa cup and the european matches the following season when I can just say to my son, at least you have a lovely stand to sit in!!!!!

That's what I thought ... it won't be this year we're doomed!

Point taken.

This may be naive but I can't help but think that the ring fenced money is money that may otherwise be invested in the playing side. In any event whichever way you look at it the stand needs to be paid for and prem money is the likeliest way of achieving that.

If we went down in the meantime the financial squeeze would really be on - generous though parachute payments are. A couple more years of prem money would go a long way to covering the costs and mean we would be on an even keel when we do go down. (To me we feel like West Brom and Stoke a couple of seasons before they imploded - too many journeymen prem players on inflated salaries and too close to FFP limits).

Wasn't it supposed to be "funded" by ring-fenced monies from our US owners, or was that 'fake news'?

You roughly get to spend up to £40 mil on transfers every summer, if your wages aren’t bloated or the prospects aren’t being mercenary, and that’s just to stand still. If we spent nothing for 1 season let alone 2 we’re likely to be relegated. The way we have to do it is either as it was planned. A director buy in or bank loan or director loans. That way it can be paid off on over a longer timeframe than 2 years or when those owners sell the club onto someone who can’t be bothered with a complete overhaul of the club. What we’re doing is quite pathetic seeing how rich the Americans are, what was claimed when they bought in with 2010’s shares reduced to issue some of that share to the Americans and the £100mil buy in ringfenced for the new stand. It really does make you wonder and suspect how much we’re flying by the seat of our pants and what we’d actually be doing if we didn’t have Zaha and Popovic recommending us Jedinak plus whoever spotted Bolasie and Delaney suddenly becoming available after the season had started and he was about to retire because we wouldn’t have been promoted and would probably still pretending to run as a professional football club.

I think that depends on the starting point doesn't it?

We've just had our first season of nearly zero net spend and I suspect next time around will be similar. But our starting point was having one of the strongest - albeit underperforming - "other" squads in the prem. My guess is if we keep Roy for another season we'll be safe if underwhelming. Once he goes and the new manager comes in and the squad needs to be overhauled on minimal money to fit his ideas then the gig is over (WBA and Stoke style).

I don't like it one bit but the only way I can see us spending in the next season or so to any level is by cashing in on Wilf or more especially AWB who I guess will be a target for at least one of the big boys this summer. Our net spend will still be minimal but our outlay would increase. (I'm assuming here that no ownership change is on the cards and that as with WBA our scope for manoeuvre is limited by FFP and that is unlikely to change any time soon - happy be corrected on that).

Good points although I still think we may spend up to an affordable £30 mil next season even if Roy stays. It would be great to clear the decks without spending more than £20 mil over these 2 seasons to provide a new manager with £50+ mil to spend but it’s unrealistic. Players age and lose their prime before you attempt to add more to the team or squad.

We actually did well bringing in 3 perm players (albeit 1 a keeper) on a net spend of £10 mil but that isn’t always possible and Meyer isn’t the finished article anyway. But that was after a shambolic January so it became the bare essentials and thank fvck it wasn’t another shambles.

Or we do as you suggest and cash in on Wilf or AWB.

If Moses does indeed come in I would not be surprised

In terms of Zaha, of course he would command a substantial price but I have heard it said from more than one supporter that in their opinion the hype far exceeds the substance.Views expressed that he was somewhat over-rated, a bit of a 'Show pony' with histrionics who tries to over-elaborate all the time. Many others of course will have him on the Palace pantheon of greats.
