I see that from February 2nd, you can't buy anything from Selhurst Park unless you've got a debit/credit card.

I know I'm old, but it seems a bit stupid to me to pay for something like a drink that costs a couple of quid by card.

Also, what about youngsters that come on their own (14/15 year olds). Hardly any of them will have a debit card.

I can see the burger van at the back of the Holmesdale doing a roaring trade from now on.

I can see the benefits for the club in that it doesn't have to bank the cash, but it seems a bit short sighted to me.

And you can bet your life that the queues don't improve due to there being problems with peoples cards etc.

You'd better get used to it as that's the direction that the country is moving in.

We flew back from Alicante with BA a couple of months ago and that is a completely cashless airline

Definitely more convenient - for the club.
Eventually most businesses will be card Only. Seems to me that most youngsters ( under 40 is young to me!) do not use cash now anyway. I always carry some cash for small ( under 10-20 £) buys
as by drawing out lumps of cash every so often I can keep a better track of my spending. Something else most youngsters don’t seem to be too concerned about!

As someone who works in the hospitality and events industry, I cannot tell you how much of a nuisance handling cash transactions is. It’s an incredibly time consuming and therefore expensive method of taking money, especially on the scale of the amount of people attending a football match.

I am unsure of the total amount of outlets at Selhurst but each one would have to have enough change to satisfy everyone that pays with a £10 or £20 note. Trust me, even a lot of those who may have the change will still purchase things with a note as they don’t want to stand and count the change when told the amount. If the change runs out it must be transferred from another outlet or from a central hub, so there will be 1/2 people on game day who probably just look after change. The cash from each outlet then has to be counted and checked at the end of the day. There are now high fees to pay for banking cash, regardless of whether it’s banked or done by securicor etc. Then there is the trust issue of staff handling cash and alcohol, a potent mix to anyone who is even slightly tempted. That’s before the increasing amount of forgeries that exist on some notes and certain coins. It adds up to a massive undertaking when card payments are much easier and slicker.

I am always surprised when people say they don’t carry a card, we get that sometimes but then I do wonder what would happen if they get a puncture on the way home or have some other emergency that the cash they are covering doesn’t cover. Surely it’s just a damn sight safer for younger people too?

We work across the UK and each year in London we find that card payments increase by around 10% from the year before. It’s the way of the world.

This is indeed the way The Country is going.

Depending On the system they employ, A Contactless payment can be quicker than a cash payment, but not everyone has contactless.. not even all the banks Issue Contactless cards yet, so may well be slower still.

Added to that too many people still use and rely on cash, and as was pointed out, young fans may not even own a card.

My Whole life would be improved no end by ending cash - I barely ever use it, so barely ever carry it.

having said that It's my opinion that it is too early for people to be going cashless. It will happen, but you risk losing more business/money than you save by not taking cash...

Once we been forced to go cashless, you watch the fees suddenly appear.

It already doesn't work well for tourists.

Didn't work out well for people with money in Cyprus either when they decided to have bank levy to fix their financial problems.

Optimistic as ever
