Thanks Rob - a considered reply!

I think the sh1t will hit the fan next week and we will be in a very dodgy position. The Queen has a range of rights and duties as a constitutional monarch and apart from dissolving Parliament she can call upon someone else to form a government. That does not have to be the leader of the opposition but someone who can command the confidence of the House or form a government of national unity - which is increasingly to me, to be the way out.

UGetting back to the OP’s question (PV).

I believe that under the circumstances where the government are unable to obtain the support of the majority in the commons that the Queen may invite the leader of the opposition to try and form a government. (Hopefully this will not be necessary!).
If they unable to do so then a general election is then called.

I am by no means a constitutional expert and are prepared to be corrected, or have the position clarified further.

you all speak of high flying , high powered , highly controversial politics, legal precedent etc etc .... and i must remind you she is 92.

i do not wish to sound ageist, but give her a break and let her enjoy her autumn years with racehorses and cake.

as an absolute minimum, this thread question is about the clever people working around QE2. She can advise on the arrangement of the napkins.

She could also use the opportunity to stand down and let Chas sort it out. That would put the cat among the pigeons!

If only she had done that years ago.

We could be talking to plants rather than destruction by Brexit.
