I've got to say, if his excuse is genuine, it is really truly unfortunate because I don't know who waves with their hand in that position, straight arm and thumb tucked under their hand whilst also having a fairly straight hand to help carry his voice - all directed at someone taking a photo who happens to be German. Having said that I don't think he is stupid enough, and the crowd he is with really isn't the sort that I could imagine it being a funny joke...

On what basis are you saying the photographer was German?

Because according to the original reports the picture was taken by and posted by Meyer.

It's not like someone has had their phone hacked here.

It did get released, it was released by Meyer who probably didn’t even realise what was going on in the background otherwise do you think he would have posted it, or do you perhaps think he knew what Wayne was doing and wanted to drop him in the s***e? I really don’t think that, this has just been an unfortunate incident from start to finish.

Wayne said he was gesturing to speed the picture taking up, there must be a witness or two who can back this up.

With all due respect, this isn't the point is it? Even if he did do a nazi salute, it was at a private party and it was presumably a bit of a lark when a bit pissed? I'm no fan of WH on the pitch but he doesn't deserve this. The FA should FRO.

I guess you're not as cynical as I am, Chris.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

What is the point after he's been charged?

I can be very cynical - but if he's telling the truth, a half decent QC should be able to put up a robust defence.

I don’t disagree it’s unfortunate, my point was there is no point complaining about a lack of privacy when the photo has been purposely taken and uploaded to be shared with the world.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

It seems like political correctness gone mad, but actually its probably fair enough.

He very clearly was making a nazi salute, the FA very clearly have to have rules about this sort of thing, and if you've got rules but you only enforce them sometimes then you might as well not have them at all.

It's a bit like the time England and Scotland weren't allowed to wear poppies when they played each other. At first glance it seemed crazy - both sides wanted to wear them and nobody was offended, but fifa were insistent that there could not be any official political gesture in a game.

Obviously the rule doesn't exist to prevent the likes of England and Scotland wearing poppies. It exists to try and minimise the dangerous craziness whenever Serbia play Albania, or Ireland play Northern Ireland, or whatever. But you've got no chance doing that if you're not going to apply the rules everywhere.

The same applies to Hennessey. The FA fined and banned Anelka for doing that quenelle thing after he scored, and they have to be even handed.

Hennessey should just have accepted it straight away and asked that the circumstances be considered. He was in a largely private place, making a joke at the expense of a colleague (and friend?) in the company of people who know him and so would know it was a joke, whether they found it funny or not, and he had no idea it would be seen by anyone else. All this makes it totally different to doing it on the pitch.

He can't say any of that now of course, because of the cock and bull story he came out with at the time, presumably in a bit of a panic. Shame really, as honesty would surely have been the best policy. There can't be a person in the UK who genuinely thinks he's a bloody nazi, and the FA could have found him guilty but let him off with a warning. Hopefully they still will.

So the gesture is inconclusive from the image and nobody complained. Except the Twitter mob which the mainstream media gleefully lapped up to stir the pot. Hennessey is a lot of things but there is no evidence he is a Nazi. This is the world we live in - trial by Twitter. I'd rather the FA concentrated on their actual job like punish Mo Salah for simulation at Anfield last weekend.

We'll have to disagree - it looks anything but clear to me. I'd prefer to believe what he said afterwards.
